The Airedale Terrier - the king of all terriers - comes from the green valleys of Yorkshire. Before the First World War, Airedale carried patrol and guard service in the coast guard and on the railways. During the war he worked in the Red Cross: he found wounded, carried reports. This is the largest among the terriers, its height in the shoulders is 58 cm. This breed appeared as a result of crossing small terriers with the otterhound. In the end, a brave terrier was obtained, having an incomparable scent and attraction to water. He successfully hunts big game, but at the same time at home he can behave like an outgrown puppy. He would love to play all day if he were allowed to. The Airedale Terrier is a wonderful watchman and guard. In addition, he is the perfect companion for children of any age. It is full of boiling energy, has a strong balanced temperament.

Airedale hair

The coat should be stiff, dense and wire-like, it should lie straight, fit snugly to the body, completely cover the body and legs of the dog. The toughest coat sometimes curls or light waves just form on it. At the base of very stiff integumentary hair, shorter and softer hair called undercoat should grow. Erdel must be brushed daily with a stiff brush, and if you want to show it at the exhibition, regularly trim it manually. If you are not preparing your dog for the show, you can only pluck the wool in spring and summer so that the dog is cooler and has a neat appearance.

Airedale Care

Grooming / Haircut, Airedale Trimming

Those owners who are interested in cutting a home airedale and want to use a quick and easy way to cut, should buy an electric machine designed to cut small pets. Thanks to such a machine, you can always keep your dog neat and trimmed with a minimum of effort on your part.

However, you need to pay attention to the following:

  • This applies only to domestic dogs. In no case do not shear the airedale if you intend to bring him to the exhibition ring.
  • After a machine haircut, the newly growing hair becomes soft and curly.
  • If you cut the hair of the machine too short, almost to the skin, it can cause irritation. In areas where the hair is cut too short, for example, under the throat or around the ears, apply a good emollient ointment or baby lubricant.
  • If the hair is plucked, it all consists of new hair, but after the machine cutting, the dead hair and all the hair of the undercoat remain on the dog. Therefore, we speak in favor of frequent combing with a comb and a brush with wire teeth in order to timely remove dead hair and improve the texture of the coat.

People who admire the beautiful coarse hair of the Airedale Terrier, which was obtained by plucking, shudder at the mere mention of the fact that you can even touch the hair of a dog of this breed with a machine. However, the fact remains - this often happens, and to the great satisfaction of the many owners of domestic Airedale terriers. The airedale is one of those dog breeds that is easiest (and not only among terriers) to cut with a machine. In addition, a trimmed airedale is a much happier dog and a more pleasant member of the family circle

Drive the machine in the direction the hair is lying. The exceptions are those places where it is desirable to leave the hair shorter - such as the throat, ears, sides of the head and stomach, and when cutting hair in these areas, drive the machine against the growth of wool.

To cut the hair on the sides of the head and on the ears, use either a thinner blade or cut against the growth of the coat. Drive the machine along the edges of the ears, pressing it with your index finger to cut the ears along an oblique line. Scissor the shaggy hair around the edges and inside the ears. Trim your eyebrows so that it looks like a show haircut, that is, the hair of the eyebrows should be longer above the inner corners of the eyes and shorter than the outer corners, so that they gradually turn into wool on the head. Comb the hair on the front of the head with a comb and trim the hair too long on the crown of the head to make it look even.

Please note that the most important thing is to manually or using a machine to achieve smooth transition lines from one part of the dog’s body to another. There should be no sudden changes in hair length. Try to make sure that one area imperceptibly merges with another.

Trim the fringe of the hair on the dog’s legs, cut off the long hair growing between the paw pads, trim the claws, bathe the dog - that's all!

Airedale Trimming

The general scheme for trimming an airedale is similar to the scheme for processing a wire-haired fox-terrier, shown in the previous section. Nevertheless, it is useful and interesting for the owners to know all the subtleties of this cosmetic procedure specifically for their breed, and therefore we will meet such a natural desire. The airedale should be trimmed so as to emphasize the specific characteristics of the breed, the merits of the dog and vice versa to hide small flaws.

The timing of the treatment of body parts in the table does not mean that the dog is trimmed in parts. Just 6-8 weeks before the show, the dog is completely treated, and then, at the indicated time, the individual sections are corrected.

Airedale with an ideal wool structure is completely plucked: forehead, neck, chest, upper back, sides, back of the thighs. With the help of scissors, the hair is shortened only on the part of the neck and throat, as well as on the ears.

Remember that by freeing the ear from the hair, you contribute to the correct placement of the ears. Therefore, cut the hair on the ears more often.

Hair cuts begin from the forehead, retreating 1-1.5 cm from the eyes, and lead towards the back of the head. The cheekbones and head under the ears are cut from bottom to top as short as possible. And the hair remaining on the head and muzzle is combed forward and the upper part of the muzzle and eyebrows are treated.

Fig. 14 Airedale Terrier Trimming Scheme

On the upper part of the muzzle, the hair is leveled and shortened, creating a straight line of transition from the forehead to the muzzle, and the excess hair on the mustache and beard is removed, giving the head a rectangular shape. The beard is left only on the lower jaw and is trimmed with scissors so that it has a maximum length in front, vanishing at the level of the corners of the lips. The cheeks are plucked shortly and cut. Eyebrows are cut open eyes. When viewed from the side, the head should have a perfectly straight top line extending from the tip of the nose and ending at ear level.

The neck at the top is trimmed short, and the hair at the withers is left longer. When trimming, it is necessary to emphasize the muscular scruff with a slightly rounded line.

The front of the chest and shoulders are trimmed briefly to the elbows. The wool is removed in a direction from the bottom up, achieving a smooth transition to the long hair of the forelimbs.

The back, sides, lower back, croup and tail are trimmed to a moderate length before the exhibition and very shortly in spring and early autumn.

From the bottom of the chest to the stomach, a smooth, straight line runs upward. The hair on the abdomen is briefly trimmed with scissors.

The hips and hind limbs trim a little, achieving a smooth transition to the tufts on the front of the thigh. No need to make "pants", like a poodle, and also very shortly pinch, leaving only a border of hair on the front surface of the hind legs. The task of trimming is to emphasize the dog's strong muscular hind limbs. The hair on the inner thighs is only slightly trimmed with scissors, forming a straight line from top to bottom.

The forelimbs and metatarsals of the hind are combed and slightly plucked, achieving the form of "columns".

When processing the paws, the hair around the claws, between the pads and around the paws is cut, giving the paws a rounded, compact shape ("cat" paws). Long hair on the front legs should not cover the claws.

When trimming, pay special attention to creating smooth transitions from short-trimmed hair to longer.

Description and Features

Despite the universality of the breed, its representatives are more often brought up for the purpose of hunting. As you know, terriers were bred for trapping and killing rodents that settled in houses where people lived. Small size, dexterity and speed are standard qualities that dogs from this group possess, and an airedale is no exception.

This is not a bloodthirsty dog, but if she smells prey in the forest, she will immediately chase after her, rapidly increasing her running speed. Another reason for the frequent exploitation of this animal on the hunt is its excellent scent. It will never confuse the smell of a mouse, rabbit or bird.

Also, Airedale breed Ideal for protecting people and territories. Observation, good learning and swiftness - this is what makes her a great bodyguard. If the beast feels a threat looming on the household, its reaction will not take long.

But, he will attack only as a last resort. The clever dog understands that causeless aggression against someone will cause the owner to disapprove, so he never attacks for no apparent reason. Such a dog will first warn a suspicious stranger with a loud bark, and if he does not change his intentions, he will run to him.

But that is not all. Blind people often bring such pets. Affectionate and responsible airedale is a great guide. He understands that he is entrusted with a serious task, therefore, he will never leave his beloved master alone with his problem.

Also, these wonderful dogs often help the police, especially when it comes to finding drugs. The reason is the same - excellent scent. Of course, a small airedale cannot neutralize an armed robber, as a German shepherd does, for example, but he will definitely find it in the wake and find cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other types of psychotropic substances.

The birthplace of the breed is Great Britain. So she was nicknamed after the Yorkshire River - Erdel. It is believed that breeders began experiments on crossing different terriers to order from wealthy aristocrats. Noble hunters wanted to do what they liked with a nimble, skillful and fast dog, but not one of the existing ones at that time was not suitable for them.

Interesting! Such a dog has a valuable ability - trapping aquatic animals. Not every four-legged hunter can boast of its presence.

The desire to serve a man made the dog a useful messenger who was actively exploited by the military during an unstable political situation. Today it is more often used as a home friend, that is, a companion.

Breed standard

Dog airedale very well built. She is one of the largest hunters weighing up to 32-33 kg. The growth of bitches is slightly smaller than that of males - about 55 cm, while the growth of the second is 60-63 cm. This is a very energetic beast that moves quickly thanks to a lean stomach and long strong legs.

His body is rectangular, elongated. The abdomen is tightened, the sternum is muscular. The Airedale has a very strong skeleton. It radiates strength not only while running and walking, but even when lying down. Its neck is wide, slightly oblong. The paws of the animal are long and strong, which allows it to move gracefully.

The tail is set on the lower back, high. The standard requires its stopping. But, not every owner of the dog will go for it, because he understands that the fluffy rounded tail does not interfere with his pet.

The head of the dog has an oval shape, the muzzle is elongated forward. The frontal bulge is not visible, while the nasal back, on the contrary, is well expressed. The nose is round, large, painted black.

The peculiarity of the breed is lips tightly adjacent to the jaws. This terrier has a very strong grip on his teeth. The color of the fangs is bright white. The triangular auricles are small, hanging down along the edges of the head.

The coat of the dog is very thick and dense. It covers her entire body, even the lower part of her legs. The upper body, ears and neck have a dark shade, closer to black, and the abdomen, chest, muzzle and legs are yellowish-red.

According to the standard, only such a color is allowed, but the light part can be different: from reddish to sand. The main feature of the breed is the "antennae" at the nose. They consist of straight elongated wool.

The presence of hard undercoat allows the dog not to freeze in the water when he dives for prey. By the way, the longest fur of the animal is on its hips, legs and sternum. Puppies of this breed are born pure black. Their chest cells brighten as they grow older, if this does not happen, the animal is rejected as unclean.

Character

This is a very positive dog. He always gives his owners a lot of positive emotions, relieves them of negativity and emotions. Having such a dog means becoming a fun and active person. She is energetic, impressionable and inquisitive.

The animal never sits idle. A calm rest in the afternoon does not suit him at all. It will be worn around the territory in search of impressions, new people, animals, etc.

Airedale in the photo depicted very smart. A well-developed intellectual dog cannot but please its owner. She is smart, smart, and she also has great intuition. It is believed that four-legged friends can "read" the psycho-emotional state of their master.

If such an animal is attached to a specific person, it will react depending on the emotion that it has at the moment. For example, during the owner’s aggression period, the dog is unlikely to bring him the ball for the game, and if there is a smile on his face, he will gladly do it.

The owners of these dogs note that they are very affectionate. Airedale's tenderness is so touching that it makes even serious men smile. He is capable of pranks. If the beast is bored, he can go home in search of adventure and have fun breaking a pillow, a magazine, or chewing on a wallpaper.

Important! Never reassure a shamed dog if you find him "at the crime scene." He will have to be punished so that from now on he behaves appropriately.

Phlegmatic and melancholy personalities such a pet is definitely not suitable. He needs a master with an active lifestyle, who will go hunting with him, to the park and even to a contest. Yes, the Airedale is an artistic and photogenic dog. He likes to be in the spotlight and communicate with other four-legged people’s favorites.

The dog adores his family. She gets along well with every member of her, especially with babies. Being close to the children, such a pet will feel like their friend and bodyguard.

He will never allow strangers to the kids, however, as well as to adult households. He is sincerely attached to every creature that lives with him, since he understands that it is part of his pack.

Terriers need competent educational work. They tend to be stubborn and dominant. Despite the love, intelligence and tenderness for people, they can "pull the blanket over themselves." Their behavior must be correctly corrected from early childhood. Below we will tell you exactly how.

The advantage of keeping such an animal in the house is a calm transfer of loneliness.Yes, airedales are very attached to the owners, but they understand that they will not leave them, therefore, left alone, they will lie at the front door and will humbly wait for their loved ones to return to the house.

The owners of such pets should remember that they have a bloodthirsty hunting instinct. He often wakes up when meeting with rodents and cats. These animals are a potential prey for a four-legged hunter. But, since any dog can be socialized, acquaintance of an airedale with a cat often ends with the establishment of friendly and strong relations between them.

Such a dog is strong in spirit, fearless and self-confident. However, he never makes quarrels, especially with his own kind. But, if some dog challenges him, he certainly will not retreat. We can say that representatives of this breed are devoid of aggression. They are quite contact and peaceful.

Maintenance and care

Airedale is one of the most unpretentious dog breeds in grooming. They are suitable for living in any territory, the main thing is to provide them with comfortable conditions.

Since this is an active and moving breed, it may seem that life in the apartment will not suit her. But no. But, such content must necessarily include frequent walking. Going for a walk with a dog should be from 3 to 5 times a day, no less. He must not be tolerated.

Important! Till airedale puppy they are vaccinated, it is extremely undesirable to go out with him. The fact is that during this period his body is vulnerable to viruses and bacteria. Better to wait until all vaccinations are complete.

The instinct of a hunter always moves animals, therefore, during a walk, you should not scold him for trying to dig a hole. By the way, if you plan to keep such a dog on the street while living in the house, then be prepared to say goodbye to your garden. He will begin to loosen the earth there, dig out roots and dig in the remnants of food. All these actions are performed by the dog unconsciously.

Physical activity is what this dog especially needs. Without activity, he runs wild and stops making contact. Without new experiences, he can even escape. And, since the Airedale is a beautiful dog, it can be abducted. Therefore, never deprive her of the opportunity to gain new experience and be in the role of an adventurer.

Also, the content of such a pet involves assigning him 2 sites: for sleep and food. He must understand that there are rules in the house, and he will have to deal with specific affairs in places strictly reserved for this.

The coat of the king of terriers is his main outward virtue. The owner of such a pet will have to monitor her condition regularly. Actually, this is the only difficulty. Dog fur should be combed with an iron scallop, preferably every day. This is an easy, pleasant experience. Four-legged human favorites like it when the owners take care of them and give affection. At such moments, their bonds are strengthened.

Such an animal is practically not subject to molting; therefore, it does not leave “surprises” in the form of shreds of wool around the house. Also, it does not have a specific smell. But you still have to bathe the dog.

We recommend using tar tar shampoo for this. It has a positive effect on the skin and does not cause irritation. Also, do not forget to brush your dog’s ears, teeth, sharpen claws and rinse your eyes with tea or warm water.

Nutrition

Without a balanced diet, the dog becomes weak and exposed to diseases due to a decrease in immune defense. The specificity of this breed is that its representatives assimilate raw food well.

The main product that an airedale puppy should eat daily is chicken meat. It is only necessary to heat it if you doubt its freshness and origin. Food prohibited for a pet dog:

  • Smoked meats.
  • Sausages.
  • Paste.
  • Fatty meat broths.
  • Raw potatoes.
  • Semi-finished products.
  • Sour berries.
  • Dishes with spices (except salt).

For such a dog, it is necessary to cook cereals, for example, rice or millet, make mashed potatoes and stew vegetables. As a treat, fresh fruits, such as an apple or a banana. Gradually, a six-month-old dog is transferred to dry food.

Life expectancy and reproduction

Airedale is a beautiful and faithful pet that will serve the owner for at least 13-14 years, with good maintenance, of course. Reproduction of representatives of this breed involves a high-quality selection of individuals: male and female. Firstly, they should not be relatives, even distant, and secondly, their compliance with the standard is mandatory.

Remember! The breeder will never even help out a puppy even $ 100 if he is not born a purebred.

The bitch should be slightly lower than the male. Mature dogs, well-built and active, are selected. Crossing their experts recommend from 2 years of age. During estrus, females count 4 days - this is a prerequisite for mating. So, the probability of conception is much higher.

How to understand that a bitch is pregnant? Earlier than a month after mating with a dog, pay attention to her tummy. If it is noticeably rounded, then after about 70 days you can expect a replenishment.

In Russia, it’s not so often that you can meet a person walking with such a dog on the street. Yes, it is a rare breed in this area. On the Internet there are very few ads for the sale of such pets. Since the terrier dog is serious, we recommend buying it in a kennel.

Dog breeding facilities in the capital are responsible for monitoring their health and psychological condition. Airedale price for 2019 - 25-40 thousand rubles. Without documents, you can buy an animal "with hands." In this case, it will cost about 5-10 thousand rubles. But, we advise you to choose the first purchase option.

Parenting and training

Airedale is not a universal breed. She is wayward, but smart. This indicates the need for educational work. Just note that such a dog requires a lot of time, so if you do not have such a valuable resource - it definitely will not suit you.

A dog prone to stubbornness will never do what his soul does not lie to. But, if you gain credibility - it will deprive him of a choice. It is important that the dog trust the owner. Without this, you can not count on her obedience.

The terrier is not afraid of the physical strength of a person, so frightening him is useless. But the disappointment of the owner will definitely make him unhappy. Therefore, in the upbringing of such an animal, it is better to use the gingerbread method.

Before training, show him a treat that will definitely interest him, and tell the team, for example, to sit. If the beast does not understand what they want from him, personally demonstrate to him the fulfillment of what he wants and treat him with a treat. Such work requires not only consistency and concentration, but also patience.

Do not give up if the first time you failed to establish contact with the Airedale. Few can immediately earn his trust. This dog is very smart, therefore, knows its worth. The secret of her submission is in character. Give the animal the opportunity to see for yourself your leadership. It should understand that in the family you are the main one, that is, the leader.

It is also recommended that other types of encouragement be used in raising a representative of this breed - scratching, verbal approval, stroking, etc. It is believed that a dog is better at training if it has spectators.

The Airedale is not without artistry, therefore, we advise you to give it the opportunity to impress others. Let them openly show him admiration, for example, applaud.

Recommendation! Start practicing with your dog before she turns 3 months old. Earlier contact will avoid possible problems in her training.

A good memory of the animal helps him memorize a large number of commands and words. According to experts, the intelligence of an airedale is not inferior in terms of intelligence to a 2.5-year-old child.

It is very important from early childhood to teach the dog obedience, especially during walking. He should not react to cats and rodents, which can easily be found on the street. If the animal is angry when meeting someone on the street, do not pat him on the head, but scold him by lifting the leash so as to cause discomfort.

This method is called "negative reinforcement." The dog will establish a connection between his reaction and the state of discomfort. Over time, she will learn not to respond to other animals if the owner is nearby.

Airedale

Airedale is a British breed of black-headed hunting dogs bred for bullying river rats and otters. It is characterized by increased emotionality and an elegant exterior: a neat, stylishly disheveled beard and stiff hair throughout the body.

Brief information

  • Breed Name: Airedale
  • Country of origin: Great Britain
  • Breeding time: mid 19th century
  • Weight:

20 kg

  • Height (height at the withers): males 58-61 cm, females 56-59 cm
  • Life span: 11-13 years old
  • Highlights

    • Airedale is a breed that is contraindicated in loneliness. The dog left unattended in the apartment is very bored and entertains itself with various mischief such as damage to shoes and stripping of wallpaper.
    • As befits a true terrier, an airedale loves to drive small animals and birds into stress, chasing and trying to grab them. At the same time, he is quite loyal to the coffees, with whom he shared his living space since childhood.
    • Initially, the breed was bred as a hunting one, but over time it was transformed into a service-decorative one. Today, there are only a few animals that fully work with wild birds and animals.
    • To ensure an Airedale terrier a comfortable life, one must be, if not a hunter, then at least an adherent of an active lifestyle. Lacking physical activity and walking from case to case, the dog quickly degrades and loses interest in everything that surrounds it.
    • The passion for "archaeological excavations" in the Airedale terriers is innate. Keep this in mind when lowering the dog off the leash near the neighboring rose garden.
    • Airedale are not ready to love children by default. They are not averse to looking after the little one and taking part in her games, but they will react quickly and harshly to infringement of self-esteem.
    • In the Airedale, the creepy owner and lover of other people's goods coexist peacefully. In particular, dogs love to store various objects near their loungers and snarl at those who are trying to encroach on supplies.
    • Thanks to her extraordinary intelligence and ingenuity, the Airedale terraces are very happy for various adventures. For example, it doesn’t cost them anything to open a door that is not tightly closed, and also to get forbidden sweets from kitchen cabinets.
    • The lively temperament of the Airedale Terriers does not fade with age, which helps them to maintain youthful enthusiasm throughout life.
    • Airedale wool does not shed and practically does not smell (provided that the dog is trimmed in a timely manner), which makes it convenient to keep the breed in a city apartment.

Airedale Terriers - crazy funky, harmoniously combining such character traits as independence, passion and unlimited devotion to the owner. With these bearded "Yorkshire" will not ride both authoritarianism and excessive liberalism. They are ready to recognize the authority of a person only if he respects their desires and does not allow himself to be manipulated. If the stars are in agreement and you follow such tactics of behavior in relations with animals, airedale is 100% your pet.

Possible diseases and methods for their treatment

Airedale are one of the strongest dogs in terms of health. They are strong, always active and very hardy. If the owner of such a pet takes care of him regularly, the likelihood that he will get sick is very low. However, any domestic dog can hurt.

Terriers are often diagnosed with joint dysplasia. If you notice that the dog has difficulty stepping on its feet, whining while running or avoiding walking, it needs to take an X-ray of its legs. Only the veterinarian can decrypt the diagnostic results. He prescribes treatment, if necessary.

And yet, due to the presence of undercoat, the skin of these dogs often itches. Therefore, if you notice that your four-legged pet is behaving uneasily and regularly scratching his paw and lying on his back, he should be shown to the doctor to prescribe a skin ointment.

Do not forget to use flea medications at least once a year. More convenient than others - spray. It is easy to spray over the entire surface of the airedale. Also, for the prevention of diseases, we recommend additionally giving him vitamins.

    Airedale Terrier History

The largest of the British Terriers was bred around the middle of the XIX century, in the Erdel Valley (western Yorkshire), which later gave the name to the breed. Carried away by such unpretentious entertainment as the persecution of river otters, English hard workers from time to time indulged in the crossbreeding of individual varieties of terriers. In a similar way, the townsfolk, who were hooked on a cruel game, planned to bring out a strong, graceful dog, capable of breaking records on catching rodents. In the end, one of the experiments, in which the red and old English black and tan terriers took part, paid off. So the first airedale were born. At first, these four-legged "Yorkshire" did not have a separate name, so in different parts of the country they were called water, working, wire-haired and coastal terriers. Officially renaming animals into Airedale terriers, approving them as an independent breed, was possible only in 1886.

The gene pool of dogs was gradually expanding. Dog handlers are sure that at some stage they received the blood of an Irish wolfhound, Vendée basset-griffon and otterhound, and that it was these breeds that gave the Airedale phenotype the necessary completeness and expressiveness. As for the working qualities, it turned out almost immediately: Airedale terriers are able to find animal holes, but not to get into them. In this regard, in England, animals were used in classic gun hunting. Possessing a sharp scent, these bearded fidgets never lost track, and they were not distracted by the smell of gunpowder. In addition, airedales worked professionally on water.

Since the end of the XIX century, the breed began to smoothly expand its habitat. So, for example, in 1880, several individuals emigrated to the United States. The Airedale Terrier party arrived in Russia at the beginning of the Russo-Japanese War and for practical purposes only. The British Embassy sent dogs to perform military service and help the wounded soldiers. Nevertheless, the animals really became famous during the years of the First World War. At the front, the Airedale terriers worked as postmen, completing what was begun to the end even with the last gasp and despite mortal wounds. Well, the maximum leap in dog popularity came at the end of the 40s of the XX century, after which interest in them slowly declined. By the beginning of the 60s, airedales moved from the 20th to the 50th place in the list of the most popular breeds of our time.

    Teeth and jaw

Strong, deep jaws give massiveness to the muzzle of the airedale. At the same time, over-developed jaw bones that enhance the cheekbones of the muzzle are not welcome by the exhibition commissions. The teeth of the representatives of this breed are strong, closed in a regular scissor bite.

    Black, medium sized lobe.

    Eyes

Airedale have small, attentive eyes: not too deep set, but not convex. The darkest color of the iris is welcomed and very undesirable light.

The ears of the dogs are small, have the shape of an isosceles triangle and fit well to the head. The fold of the ear canal should extend above the line of the skull, while high-set or emphasized hanging ears are a serious drawback.

The airedale's neck is distinguished by medium length, good muscularity and overall dryness.

    Limbs

The legs of the Airedale are straight, moving freely and in a straight line while running. The dog’s shoulder blades are long, strongly laid back, the elbows freely “walk” along the body. The hind legs provide a springy push due to massive hips, good joint angles and strong hock joints. Paws are compact, rounded in shape, with moderately arched toes and dense pads.

    Color

A typical color of the Airedale terrier is reddish-brown with black or brownish-brown-black (the so-called "grizzly" color). The shade of hair on the outside of the tail and upper part of the dog’s neck coincides with the color of the shabra. Areas with a darker color of canine - ears, lower neck, lateral parts of the skull. A small amount of white hair on the chest is allowed.

    Defects and disqualifying defects

Excellent marks at exhibitions do not shine in the first place for animals with obvious defects in anatomy. These are usually malocclusions (non-linear arrangement of incisors), incorrect movements (amble), lack of undercoat, presence of eyesore, lack of signs of sexual dimorphism. Individuals with vices such as cryptorchidism, deviant behavior (unreasonable cowardice or aggression), malocclusion, a deformed constitution type and anatomical deformities in general are subject to complete disqualification, which blocks access to entering the ring.

    Wool Care & Hygiene

Seasonal molting is not about Airedale terriers. On their own, representatives of this breed discard only a small percentage of the undercoat, so that the main job of bringing the pet's “fur coat” in proper form rests with the owner. The dog's coat is updated by trimming (tweaking), which is of two types: hygiene and exhibition. In the first case, the wool is plucked twice a year and completely. This allows you to refresh the dog and improve its quality. You can master the technique yourself, without consulting the groomer. Prewashed and dried wool is collected with your fingertips in a thin bundle closer to the root and pulled out in the direction of its growth. It is better to start trimming the airedale from the head, gradually making its way to the back, where the canine is removed easier and faster.

After pinching, the skin of the dog is lubricated with a nourishing cream to relieve irritation and leave the animal alone. By the way, many owners after trimming wrap an airedale in jumpsuits before going out for a walk so that the pet does not catch a cold. This is not particularly necessary if the dog is active and runs a lot on the walk. But in the case of less energetic individuals who like to sit and stand at their feet, clothes can come in handy. To stimulate the growth of a new dog at a trimmed airedale, it must be systematically combed with a brush. It is useful from time to time to comb out the bunches of dead undercoat: thus, the growing hair will lie more evenly and denser to the body of the dog.

Exhibition haircut - the procedure is more complicated and serious. Its purpose is to emphasize breed features and mask small physical flaws. The process takes place in stages, since in the ring the animal must demonstrate an already overgrown dog. 2-2.5 months before the show, the airedale is completely plucked, bypassing the area of the legs, chest, beard and mustache. Two weeks before the event, the dog is trimmed with its head, area under the tail, throat and shoulders, simultaneously aligning the transitions between areas with different lengths of hair. The most difficult stage is to give the animal a sophisticated look a couple of days before the exhibition. Usually, on the eve of the event, minor flaws are eliminated, for which there was no time before. In particular, the mustache and beard are cultivated to make the profile of the Airedale terrier emphasized rectangular, the hairs on the cheekbones are plucked out, the area around the mouth is processed, the hair on the forehead is shortened. In addition, individual owners tint their wards on the wool and other parts of the body to give it a more saturated tone. In general, exhibition trimming is a pro level, which is not necessary to strive for. It is much wiser to find a good groomer and entrust the matter to him.

Important: formally shearing airedale is contraindicated, as it changes the structure of the coat and softens it. At the same time, cutting the throat and head of the dog in order to emphasize the smoothness of the lines and the distinctness of the contour still takes place.

Caring for the Airedale terrier ears is standard, but you have to tinker with puppies, since the formation of the correct set of the ear canal is painstaking. For this reason, in the first months of life, the ears of the babies are glued to the head until they reach the desired position. In addition, the ear cartilages of young herdels need a daily massage lasting 3-5 minutes. For adults, ear funnels are cleaned of sulfur and impurities, but not massaged.

Make it a rule to peek the Airedale in your mouth once a week, checking the whiteness of his teeth. If the enamel begins to turn yellow, try to clean off the coating with a silicone nozzle sprinkled with crushed chalk or zoo. Eye examination is carried out daily, but every day you should not run after the dog with a napkin. It is enough to walk with a damp cloth on the mucous membrane of the eyelid once a week. The area of special attention is the Airedale terrier. During the meal, they get wet, crumbs get stuck in them, which adore all kinds of bacteria. To avoid the appearance of fungus and an unpleasant odor, the dogs on their chin and face are wiped off after each meal. Watch for the growth of hairs framing the dog’s lips. If they are too long, it is better to shorten them so that they do not stick together in bunches and do not form seizures.

    Feeding

Like other breeds, Airedale terriers are fed with either "drying" or "natural". The choice of the type of feeding is a matter of the personal preferences of the owner, his employment and financial capabilities. Natural special airedale does not include any special exotic products. Everything, like most dogs: raw lean meat daily, once a week, sea fish with previously removed seeds, salads from beets, carrots, cabbage, cucumber and pumpkin - every day, but in moderation. To increase the calorie portion, cereal cereals (buckwheat, rice) help. Airedale and chicken eggs will not refuse, but in the second case it is better not to overdo it: one or two times a week is enough. They feed the dog twice a day, in the liz, focusing on the weight of the animal. So, the norm of one portion for a 20-kilogram specimen can vary from 400 to 600 g, for a 29-kilogram specimen - 600-900 g. If we are talking about industrial feeds, here we will have to focus on varieties no lower than the premium class. On the other hand, when feeding an Airedale terrier with high-quality “drying”, there is a chance to save on the purchase of dietary supplements and vitamins, which cannot be dispensed with with a natural diet.

    Airedale health and disease

Even such energetic and hardy breeds as the Airedale are not immune to a genetic predisposition to certain types of diseases. In particular, the most “ailment” among herdeles is a dysplasia of the hip joints. Slightly less often, animals are diagnosed with:

    • umbilical hernia
    • raw eczema
    • demodicosis
    • pannus
    • thyroid disease (hypothyroidism),
    • von Willebrand Dian disease,
    • dilated cardiomyopathy,
    • entropion
    • retinal atrophy,
    • umbilical hernia
    • hyperadrenocortism,
    • corneal dystrophy,
    • melanoma
    • lymphoma

    How to choose a puppy

    • Evaluate the general condition of the mom of the kids. If the bitch looks messy and tired, you can’t count on a healthy litter.
    • Find out how many Airedale puppies were originally in the litter, what kind of birth the bitch had, and the age of both parents. Acquiring a four-legged friend from a too young or old couple is undesirable.
    • The choice of a pet that will never enter the ring begins from the first birthdays of the babies. They begin to look at exhibition airedales already at a more serious age (5-6 months), when their exterior characteristics are expressed as distinctly as possible.
    • Having little experience in training hunting breeds, it is better to opt for "girls", they learn faster. Airedale males are more independent, although their temperament is much more restrained.
    • Pay attention to the location of white spots on the puppy's coat. If the airedale has white fingers, this is not a defect. As you grow older and change your coat, the marks will disappear, leaving only a few light hairs to remind yourself. If the white “blots” are located above the fingers, directly on the paws, they will only become more noticeable with age, as will the white “cloud” between the front legs that grabs the puppy’s chest.
    • Check with the breeder if the parents of the puppies were tested for genetic diseases - degenerative myelopathy and hyperuricosuria.
    • Check the weight of the airedale puppy before buying: a 2-month-old baby should weigh at least 6 kg, 3-month-old - 10-11 kg.

    Airedale price

Airedale puppies are not the most popular “product” on virtual bulletin boards, although there are enough kennels in the country where you can buy a healthy baby with a pedigree. The average price of a breed ranges from 25,000 to 40,000 rubles, while all puppies with a price tag below 30,000 rubles belong to the pet class (pets without the right to breed).
