All puppies and most adolescent dogs have an increased desire to nibble your things or furniture in the house. The damage to your property can be huge. Worse, if this desire leads to irreparable damage to the puppy's health. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures to prevent or correct such behavior. The best way to do this is to teach the animal to nibble on permitted items, rather than trying to wean it from it at all. One of such methods can be to create a safe environment for the puppy with a variety of toys - it can be latex toys (which can withstand increased chewing), pieces of rope, rag toys without a filler, special chewing treats for dogs. all these toys should direct the puppy's research activities in the right direction.
The puppy should have a sufficient number of toys, but should not give him more than half of them at the same time. From time to time, the composition of the toys should change, which will maintain a constant interest in them. It is necessary to strive for the puppy to nibble the toys intended for this, in every possible way encouraging him for this with praise or a treat. When a puppy nibbles a toy, you can throw him a piece of cookie - this will further strengthen his correct behavior (because when he bites not a toy, but another thing - no one gives him cookies).
Even with an exceptional choice of seductive toys, there will always be objects in the house that the puppy wants to try for a tooth. Until there is sufficient confidence in the correct behavior of the puppy, it must be kept under constant control or closed in a safe place. There are individuals that should be looked after up to 1.5 - 2 years. You can hang the bell on the collar, which will warn the owner about the movement of the puppy.
You should pay attention to the inadmissibility of giving the dog old things - you should not be allowed to chew on old things, because the dog does not distinguish between old and new things. Accordingly, she will not understand why she will be punished for chewing on her new boots. As a puppy grows older, he needs to be given more room to move around the house. Additional measures will help to avoid the troubles associated with exploring a new territory. The puppy can form a negative attitude to any object, making it unpleasant to taste, odorous aerosols, burning peppers or mustard will help in this.
You should not punish a pet after seeing that it is gnawing things of the owner. You can interrupt the behavior with a sudden noise, and then give the toy. It is undesirable to apply punishment - it can cause fear of the owner and unwillingness to communicate with him.
2. Territory label
If a dog throws urine or, rarely, feces onto a vertical surface, this is the behavior of the territory label. Horizontal tagging is very difficult to distinguish from natural items, but here you need to pay attention to such signs of tagging, as subsequent raking by the hind legs or the appearance of marks on a significant object, for example, on a bed where the owner or guest recently rested.
3. Unintentional reinforcement
Many owners make the mistake of encouraging the dog to run to the door and not to walk. It is worth encouraging a dog only if she has accomplished her needs on the street. Some dogs do not recover on a leash, in which case the owners have to let them go. But a treat is given only if the dog has noticed the correction. If they ate it by returning to the owner, the dog will quickly get used to returning for a treat - without making the necessary arrangements.
4. Health condition
Many diseases can lead to urination in the house:
- Diseases causing polyuria (diabetes mellitus, diabetes insipidus, renal failure, hypercorticism, pyometra, pathology of the liver or thyroid gland)
- Diseases causing pollacuria (cystitis, urolithiasis, prostatitis, tumors)
- Conditions causing incontinence (neurological or urethral incontinence, hypercalcemia)
- Diseases causing impaired motor function (arthritis, discopathy)
Defecation in the house can cause:
- Diseases causing frequent bowel movements (colitis)
- Conditions causing softening of the stool - weakening of bowel movements (diarrhea)
- Conditions that cause painful or difficult bowel movements (inflammation of the paraanal glands, constipation)
- Incontinence-related diseases (neurological)
- Diseases that limit mobility (arthritis, hip dysplasia)
- Cognitive impairment
5. Lack of dog walking
A dog that recovers at home, locked up for 12 hours or more, simply cannot bear it until they walk with it. Many may object: the dog waits for 12 hours from 11 pm to 10-11 am the next day. This is so, but she will not be able to endure from 7.30 in the morning until 7.30 in the evening of the same day. The formation of urine has a certain daily rhythm, and at night it is slowed down. Feeding time is also a factor affecting both bowel movements and urination, since most of the water enters the body with food, that is, during meals.
6. The acquired unscrupulous behavior in the house
There are several ways that a dog violates the rules of conduct in the house.
Perhaps during training in the street, the dog was punished on the spot and she began to hide to commit bowel movements or urination. Or she got used to uncleanliness due to the fact that in the cell where she was placed, she had to stay for a long time next to her excrement.
7. Assimilated abstinence from natural departures
Another situation that forms unwanted behavior is when the dogs finish the walk as soon as they recover. If the dog likes to walk, it will tolerate restraining bowel movements in order to prolong the walk. Upon returning, the animal will recover in the house, as it did not empty its intestines during the walk.
8. Small central habitat
Small dogs (especially dwarf breeds) and puppies are not able to distinguish between the courtyard and the street from parts of the house located relatively far from their places for sleeping, resting or feeding. They make their way to other rooms to make natural adjustments, because these rooms are located outside the center of their living area, where they spend most of their time, and they do not have a natural mechanism that prohibits them from getting dirty.
Does not trust a person
The explanation for the fact that the dog behaves constrained, and in some cases aggressively with any attempts to pat him on the head, may be distrust of people. Usually poorly socialized or once devoted animals behave this way. for example, those who have found owners, being homeless, after a long stay in shelters and nurseries.
Such dogs may not look different from domestic ones, but the mental trauma inflicted by a person once causes the animal to be on its guard all the time. Worst of all, if in the past a dog was beaten. In this case, human hands for a long time will be associated in the mind of the four-legged with pain.
Such a dog will not hope that it can feel warmth and love from touch. As soon as the arms hang over her head and she loses the ability to control them, the animal’s nervous system will react with excitement: it will make the animal jerk and strain. It does not depend on the will of the dog. You may be deeply sympathetic to her, but it will take time, strength and patience so that the animal can truly relax and trust you.
The dog's ears hurt
Gentle strokes on the head are avoided by dogs experiencing ear pain. Each touch on the diseased organ causes the animal stress and discomfort. Often this can be associated with infectious and inflammatory processes, allergic reactions, less commonly with injuries and injuries. Dogs of all breeds suffer from otitis, but owners of long hanging ears are more susceptible to the disease. Due to the structural features, the ears are practically not ventilated, which means that a favorable climate is created for the reproduction of bacteria.
It will not be difficult for an attentive owner to discern that the dog is uncomfortable: she shakes her head, constantly keeps her tilted to the side, combes the affected ear with her paw. In the area of the ear canal, redness and swelling are observed.
Injuries to the auricles or ear canal are relatively infrequent, but they should not be excluded as the cause of ear pain in dogs. In any case, only a specialist can establish a diagnosis, so the first signs of such conditions require prompt treatment by a veterinarian.
The dog has a headache
A headache resulting from injuries and neurological diseases can also be a cause of rejection of the owner’s touch. The dog is irritated, confusion and dizziness are observed, the animal can ignore the owner's voice and have reduced visual-auditory reactions. These signs will help you know for sure that your dog is not okay. Head injuries require immediate contact with a veterinary clinic, as they can be life threatening to the dog.
Scientists have proved that often headaches in dogs can be a sign of dangerous neurological diseases and manifest temporary migraine-like conditions, which causes the animal pain, stress, apathy and uncontrolled fear.
The dog has poor eyesight
Aging dogs, as well as animals with congenital problems in the structure of the visual apparatus, sometimes refuse to stroke the head due to the fact that for them it may look like a threat. Reduced visual acuity allows you to catch the movement of the hand only at close range, so such touches become unexpected, sharp and frightening for the animal. A dog can instinctively pull his head away from fright or, if he wants to, examine a subject that touches it closer.
Vision problems are very specific, and by carefully observing the animal, you can always see him having difficulties of this kind:
- mistakes and atypical reactions to the actions of others.
Dog has toothache
Dogs often have dental problems. It is always painful and unpleasant for the animal, so it will try to avoid your touch. Acute toothache can give to the head and ears, causing the dog to behave strangely.
The animal cannot always determine the source of pain itself, and with such manifestations, the picture of toothache will look blurry. The dog can itch and shake its head, refuse food and drink, show anxiety and even aggression. The owner is unlikely to be able to reliably determine the severity of the disease and its true cause, so at the first signs of unusual behavior in a dog, you should immediately show it to the veterinarian.
Letting the dog into our life, we sincerely rejoice that we can share the happiness of each new day with a tailed friend. We enjoy kissing her wet nose, walking with her and fumbling soft hair. However, the dog in the house is primarily responsibility, and care must be taken to ensure that she is healthy.
First aid for dog injuries
Dogs often fall under the wheels of cars. If you find yourself nearby, not succumbing to panic, carefully approach the animal.
Protect yourself before inspection. It doesn't matter if you help a pet dog or a homeless dog. An animal that is sick and ill will behave aggressively and may very well bite. Therefore, if the dog does not vomit, tie her face with gauze or an ordinary rag (clothes are also suitable). In this case, the nose should not be covered, otherwise the patient will not be able to breathe. Instead of a bandage, you can put on a muzzle.
Only by securing yourself, begin to act. If the situation requires it, take the dog off the road to a safe place by placing it on a flat surface.
If the dog has a dislocation or fracture, it will be severely limp or will not be able to move the injured paw (s) at all. With first aid, a bandage should be applied to ensure bone immobility. As a tire, you can use wooden boards, thick cardboard, sticks. Apply tires to intact areas of the body above or below the wound. Tie the affected limb with a bandage and put sterile cotton under the tire. If you are not sure that you will do everything right, it is better to wait for a doctor.
In case of slight bleeding, bandage the wound tightly, after applying a piece of sterile cotton wool or clean tissue several times folded on it. If bleeding is severe, apply a tourniquet above or below the wound toward the heart. It should be tightened slightly and dissolve every 15-20 minutes so that gangrene does not appear.
