How to train a puppy? How to train a puppy, at what age

Surprisingly, the first teams need to train a puppy at the age of 3 months (more about this in the article “Where to start raising a puppy"). The kid learns a lot from his mother before moving to a new house and before starting an adult, independent life (under the wing of the owner, of course!). He instinctively copies her behavior and masters the basics of communication with relatives and a person. But the most interesting thing starts from the moment the puppy moves to a new home. He will become a part of a new family, learn his nickname, his place, his bowls, adapt to the new regime of the day and master the first teams. We will talk about which of them the baby should already know in 3 months in our article.

What should a puppy be able to do at 3 months?

At 3 months, the puppy must be accustomed to the owner and family members, know his nickname, observe the feeding regimen, be able to walk on a leash and harness, play with four-legged comrades, adequately respond to external stimuli (for example, to the signals of cars on the street), calmly transfer care procedures. And also to maintain order in the house: go to the toilet on the diaper or on the street (at 3 months), do not commit actions prohibited by the owner, do not ignore the team.

The top 5 first teams in a puppy’s life are:

In the period from 3 to 6 months, this list will be doubled. And how many teams the dog will know by the year!

How to train a puppy with the “Place” team?

Teaching a puppy to this team is usually very simple. You can start it from the first days a puppy appears in a new house, as soon as he adapts a little.

Choose a comfortable couch for the puppy and place it in a calm place without drafts. Put your favorite puppy toys and treats on the bed. As soon as you see that the baby is tired and is going to rest, take him to a couch and let me eat a treat. At the same time, gently repeat the "Place" command.

If the puppy tries to run away after you put it on a bench, hold it and repeat the command. Stroke the baby, wait until it calms down, give a treat, say “good” and step back. The puppy can rise and run again. In that case, watch him. When the puppy wants to lie down, take him back to the couch and repeat all the steps. At first, the exercise should be repeated 3-4 times a day.

How to train a puppy team "Fu"?

Fu is the most important team in a dog’s life. It means a categorical ban and is used in serious and dangerous cases: when a pet picks up food on the street, expresses aggression, howls, jumps on people, etc.

In order for the puppy to learn it, you need to repeat the command "fu" every time he produces an undesirable effect. The team must be pronounced clearly and strictly. At first, it must be accompanied by a jerk of the leash, so that the puppy understands what is required of him.

Fu is a serious team. Use it only for business, and not for any convenient reason for insurance. Otherwise, the dog will stop responding to it, and this can lead to sad consequences.

How to train a puppy on the "Cannot" team?

At the first glance, the “No” command is very similar to the “Fu” team. But they have different purposes. If “Fu” is a categorical prohibition, which should always be respected, then the “not” command is a temporary ban.

When training this puppy team, it is important to distract from the currently unwanted action, i.e. switch his attention to another occupation. For example, you decided to sit in your favorite chair, and the puppy jumped on it in front of you. You need to quickly switch his attention, for example, throw a toy on the floor. As soon as the puppy jumps off the chair (that is, it stops the unwanted action), in a calm tone, command "No".

How to teach a puppy to the “To me?” Team

You can proceed to this command when trust has already been established between you and the puppy and when the puppy already knows its nickname. To work out the team will need a treat. When the puppy sees a treat in your hand, he will run to you. At this moment, command “To Me,” and as soon as the puppy runs up, treat him to a treat and praise him. In the same way, you can work out a team with feedings.

Perform exercises within the room first while the puppy is not busy. In the future, call him from the next room when he is passionate about other things, etc. Slowly move on to working out the team on the street. Repeat exercise 3-5 times a day.

How to train your puppy with the “Walk” team?

When the puppy has learned the command "Come to me", you can learn a new one - "Walk".

To do this, unfasten the leash. Give the command "Walk" and go a little ahead, carrying the dog along: you can slightly pull the collar. Let the puppy take a walk, then praise him and encourage him to treat. Over time, shorten your run and learn to send your puppy forward with one motion of your hand. Then - just a voice command. Repeat exercise 3-5 times a day.

During the walk, unfasten the leash, give the “Walk” command and take the puppy along with a small run so that it runs forward. After the puppy walks a bit, encourage stroking and dainty.

In the future, giving the command "Walk", reduce the run, and in the future just send it forward. During the day, repeat the exercise 4-5 times.

Raising and training a dog is a complex and responsible process. In the absence of experience, it is advisable to seek the support of a specialist. He will teach the basics and help to correct defects. The fact is that all dogs are different, and it can be difficult to find an approach to a pet. Especially if the breed of your choice is famous for stubbornness and independence. The longer it takes to drag a dog up, the more difficult it will be to eradicate unwanted behavior in the future. Therefore, do not hesitate, enrich your knowledge and enlist the support of a professional.

In our next article we will tell you what mistakes beginner dog breeders make in education. Take note of them so you don’t accidentally repeat.

Alone in an unfamiliar world

A puppy needs to learn a lot of secrets until he becomes an adult. If from the first day you establish uniform rules for his whole life, it will be much easier for him to get accustomed to order in the house, and in the future you will no longer need to torment your dog’s nerves. Imagine for a moment that you were separated from your family, and you ended up in a foreign country, where they speak an unfamiliar language and live by rules that are incomprehensible to you. Today you did something, and you didn’t react at all, and the next day you scolded it. How to get comfortable in this situation? Or, from the very beginning, you were taken by the hand and shown where to sleep, every day they explain what you can and cannot do. If you want, you don’t want, but you’ll try to adapt to local traditions, and over time you will learn to understand what is said and adhere to the rules.

The same happens with a puppy: for him, human logic is incomprehensible. There are no stupid dogs, there are dishonest people. You are a man, a master, and it depends only on you how smart and understanding your dog will grow. Now there are many different literature on how to train a puppy, read a few books. Think as many clear rules as possible, manage to convey them to the dog in an understandable form, do not be afraid to spend a lot of time on this. Your work will not remain meaningless, be patient - the dog will remember all the lessons and in the future will act correctly in various situations.

When to start training a puppy?

Those who are seriously thinking about acquiring a dog are concerned about how to properly train a puppy. Here, fine thread training is intertwined with education. Yes, puppies, like children, need to be raised. And you need to start this from the very first days that he appeared in your house.

First rules

The first and most important rule that every beginner breeder needs to learn is constancy in everything. The puppy should eat at a certain time in a place designated for this purpose, and not from the owner’s table when he will have lunch. Show the puppy where he will sleep. Let his rug be in a secluded corner where he can retire, and no one will disturb him.

Do not take him to your bed. Allowing the puppy to sleep with you several times, you are not only doomed to coat in bed, a constant struggle for a place (even the smallest breed can push well), but also reduce your own authority. The animal must be accustomed to the "Place" command. Each time a well-fed puppy searches for where to lie down to rest, grab him in his arms and take him to his place, while condemning the command. If he tries to break out, hold him, repeat the “Place” command again, and when he calms down, stroke and praise. If after the exercise he still tries to run away, repeat everything all over again.

You will have to work out commands and rules daily several times a day until they are fully assimilated. We repeat: no matter how you train the puppy, what commands you will train him with - be constant in everything. If, for example, a puppy cannot jump on people, then this cannot be allowed even during the game. Gently push him away, accompanied by the command "Fu", "It is impossible." If any game should stop at your command, then at the end you do not have to succumb to emotion, looking into pleading eyes, and continue to fuss.

What a puppy needs to know at the age of 1-3 months

Consider how to properly train a puppy at the age of 1-3 months. He has already managed to get used to you and the rest of the family, to his place, nickname, feeding. At this age, he still has a lot to learn: calmly treat the collar and leash, endure cleaning and washing, approach the owner (“Come to me” command), leave him (“Walk”), stop unwanted actions (“Fu”, “You can’t”), communicate with other dogs and behave properly while walking. The initial training of a puppy of a shepherd dog, like any other breed, is a very exciting and responsible process. At this age, puppies easily develop positive skills associated with various activities, especially if the fulfillment of the required commands is encouraged by goodies. Little puppies are very curious, active, they are interested in learning and studying with the owner. But their skills based on inhibitory reactions are still being developed with difficulty.

How to teach a puppy to a collar and leash, the team "To me"

Before you make the necessary vaccinations for your puppy, you have time to prepare him for the exit to the “big world”. While working out the team, do not forget to pre-train the puppy to the collar and leash. Put on your collar and immediately distract with a toy or treat. When the puppy is forgotten, quickly fasten the leash too, try again to switch his attention, let it be like this for a while. Then remove everything, let it run freely. By doing this from time to time, you will ensure that the puppy stops paying attention to ammunition.

The team "To me" plays an important role, because it is most often used in everyday life. Regardless of the age at which you started training your puppy, pay maximum attention to the development of this skill. Be patient, because puppies usually have a lot of activities that distract and do not allow them to approach the owner on demand: you need to bark a cat, run to a passerby and smell the peacefully crawling beetle. And playing, a puppy can easily get lost. The team begins to learn immediately after establishing contact with the owner, accustoming to the nickname and place. Unquestioning execution can be achieved if the puppy associates the team with subsequent promotion. When he runs away from you for 6-8 steps, say the nickname, only after the attention is focused on you - give the command. As soon as the pet runs to you, praise him and give him a treat. Repeat the exercise 3-4 times daily.

Teams that need to learn a puppy at the age of 3-6 months

During this period, it is necessary not only to continue consolidating the basic skills, but also to begin to study commands such as “Nearby”, “Lying”, “Sitting”, “Aport”, teach the puppy to show his teeth, overcome low obstacles, climb the stairs and go down with her, calmly transfer trips in transport. The necessary skills are developed not only through goodies, but also under mechanical influences (a slight jerk or pull on the leash, palm pressure, etc.). By the age of 3 months, the puppy is already able to ask for a walk in a timely manner, however, mistakes can still happen quite often, after playing, he can not always correctly interpret the body signals. Bring the puppy out after each meal, after waking up, or when you see that he is worried, hesitated, and as if looking for something. In order to avoid further mental problems, it is important for your pet to communicate with peers as often as possible, take care of this.

How to train a puppy of a shepherd dog team "Fu"

It’s not enough to want to raise a puppy, it’s important to know how. Training a German shepherd puppy, as well as dogs of other breeds, is necessary throughout their lives, however, the older they get, the more requirements are placed on the execution of commands.

To develop the skill to stop unwanted actions, proceed as follows: as soon as the puppy tries to pick up food debris from the ground, starts barking or throwing itself at the cat, chewing on the shoes - say the command “Fu” loudly and menacingly, then fix it with a mechanical action (blow to the area with a twig croup or jerked leash). Both the team itself and the subsequent mechanical impact should be moderate, not traumatic for the puppy's psyche.

Training for Aport and Dai teams

Want to know how to train a shepherd puppy and train it to the Aport team? Nothing is simpler, because the shepherd in the blood laid to serve items. Carry your pet with your favorite toy. Holding it in your hand, say the Aport command and drop it a couple of steps. If the puppy does not want to approach the toy, run up by yourself, dragging him along. As soon as he approaches the toy and grabs it, run back and give the command “To me”. Seeing that you are leaving, and having heard the already familiar command, the puppy will rush after you. When he gets closer - say the command “Give” and take the toy with your hand. If the puppy does not want to give the toy, show me a treat in his left hand. After the toy is in your hands, reward the baby with a treat and exclamation "Well done, good." Repeat the exercise 3-4 times a day.

How to train a husky puppy: what should I look for?

Siberian Husky is a very smart and hardworking breed. These are self-confident, balanced dogs with steel nerves. Husky is completely unsuitable for protection, since for centuries they acted as sled dogs in distant Siberia.

If you are an active person who loves to travel and spends a lot of time outdoors - this breed is for you.Husky can be very trained, but they are leaders by nature and can show their character. Even if you want a specialist to train your dog, remember that you also have to deal with it. Due to the good endurance, the husky can be trained in any weather conditions, you should also allocate time for long walks in the fresh air, morning runs.

From personal experience

And finally, I would like to share with you some conclusions made by the owners who successfully raise their pets:

  • you should not start training if you are in a bad mood, dogs are excellent psychologists, and your depression can turn to them,
  • both puppies and adults in everything copy the owner, a loving dog will try to be with you always and everywhere,
  • dogs are still those manipulators - they are able to find an individual approach to each in order to satisfy their own whims.

In general, there are no two identical puppies, adult dogs, each of them has its own character, various habits. Something is inherent in nature, and something is acquired throughout life. On how you will train the puppy, its character in the future depends to some extent. It depends only on you whether your pet will grow up to be a cheerful and devoted friend or a nervous unsociable creature.

Parenting course

Our educational complex is designed for puppies aged from one to three months.

Parenting and adaptation of a puppy starts from a month old, and it is better to take a puppy up to three months.
At this age, all phobias (obsessive fears), all wrong behaviors are laid. And also all the right skills are laid.

What can we teach a puppy from one to three months of age. To a lot of things:

• do not jump on the owner
• sleep soundly at night
• run on the street for master's feet
• sit quietly and wait for him to be served food
• do not bite people for limbs and clothes
• get to know the teams “to me”, “fu”, “sit”

How to teach a kid all this?
It takes your willingness and patience.

Many people ask: “For what it is possible, and for what it is impossible to punish a puppy at such a young age?” It is better to do without punishments at this age. Take care of your puppy nervous system.
I especially want to draw your attention to this listing.

Puppies under the age of three months should not be punished for:

  • heaps and puddles on the floor or carpet
  • for all material damage. If at this age the puppy took out one of the valuables and gnawed on it, it means that you did not remove it on time in a place inaccessible to the baby. If you have electrical and similar wires in an accessible place, remove them immediately. This is a favorite treat for many puppies.
  • running around jumping on furniture
  • biting off pieces from the walls. If the puppy does this, consult a doctor, maybe he lacks minerals and vitamins, or he has worms.
  • grabbing and ruffling your clothes as you pass by.
  • biting master's hands and feet. These are typical puppy games and they usually disappear by themselves after a tooth change. Sometimes I even tell my clients: “If your puppy is under 4 months old does not run after your feet and does not bite them, but lies quietly in the corner. He is sick. Measure your puppy’s temperature »

Maintaining a positive emotional attitude in dogs is necessary. But in puppies from 1 month to 3 months, it is necessary to evoke emotions that strengthen the nervous system and in the future will lead the dog to balance and restraint. The dog will choose the right situation where you can throw out your emotions, and where you need to keep complete calm.

Puppies, starting from 1 month to 3 months, are brought up by methods that cause them only joy and satisfaction and instill in them the hope that everything will be fine. Therefore, the methods of working with a small puppy are based only on positive reinforcement (affection, goodies, play). Or focused exercises based on the right to choose.

In order to start practicing with the baby, learn how to cook a treat, give it correctly and, most importantly, learn the correct tone of voice. This will be the preparatory phase for you. Until you learn these exercises yourself, you should not begin to engage with the baby.

Learning to cook a treat.

Starting today, you are introducing a new form of home wear. It is called “The owner of a large pocket with cheese.” Carry a treat with you constantly, and for each correct action of the puppy, reward him with a treat and affection.

It can be tiny pieces of hard cheese. Cheese can become hard if it lies a bit without packaging.

The dimensions of the goodies are important. If the pieces are large, then the puppy eats up quickly, and further training will no longer interest him. If the pieces are very small, then they will fall out of the jaws of the baby.

Therefore, we take the best option with a pea. It is not necessary to round them, the main thing is not shape, but size. I foresee the question: what if my dog is dry-fed, can she be given cheese? I answer as a veterinarian: Yes. But only during class. Another question: why cheese, and not dry food, which we feed? Because dry food is given strictly according to the norm - this is the time, and secondly, the puppy can choke and cough with dry pieces and will cough as well as from dry cookies. Can you have sausages? You can, of course, but your hands and clothes will be greasy, which is just unpleasant. So cheese. Learning to give a treat. It always lies with the right-handed people in the right pocket, with the left-handed people - in the left. We do not use cellophane bags. Otherwise, the dog will react to the rustling of cellophane. But we don’t need it. Consequently, appropriate clothes are selected. We are not sorry to get her a little dirty, and there are pockets on these clothes.

No more than 5 seconds should elapse between the actions of the dog and their promotion. Otherwise, promotion is generally not effective.

A treat is given in two ways. On an open palm and in a pinch (between thumb and forefinger). Both ways have a place to be. And in the classroom we will use both.

So, the owner of the "big pocket with cheese" walks around the house and begins to teach the dog the correct behavior. You can train your puppy in parallel with several methods of correct behavior.

We train the puppy to his nickname.

The name of the dog must be short and sonorous. It may not coincide with the name from the pedigree. The site has a lot of names for dogs, look and take one of them into service. Example: Siegfried is a good name, but very long to attract the attention of a puppy, preferably Zigi or Reed.

And when the baby grows up, you can use the full name. And he will respond to it. I like to teach a puppy a name in the feeding process. Take a bowl and call your baby in an affectionate voice: "Zigi, Zigi, Zigi" - often repeating the nickname several times. While doing this, show the bowl of food. From the second day, the kid will understand that it is his name and that he needs to run faster, as they will give tasty food. So much fun and on a pleasant note, you will teach the puppy to respond to the name.

Teach your dog to respond to the word "Good."

The question is, why do we need this so that the puppy responds to the word "Good." Everything is very simple. You can’t always be able to give a treat to a dog for a job well done. For example, working at a distance implies that your dog is 10 meters away from you. And how can you let him know that you are happy with him? And like this. Say the word "good" and the dog will be aware of your mood. And so we teach the puppy. We give him a treat and, pronouncing the word “good” in an affectionate voice, always affectionate, we feed him delicious cheese with our hands. You already read about the delicacy in a previous post.

You can stroke and caress the baby at this time. Learn to pet your dog properly. Pat her lightly on the chest. Slow down. But make sure that the puppy is pleased. Do not stroke the head and back. Why I will explain to those who will be engaged in our virtual group.

Practice the skill only when the puppy is not doing anything illegal at that moment. For example, he just lies still or walks up to you and has not yet put his paws on your knees. Praise and give a treat.

Here are three pillars that will help you further raise your puppy.
