American Bulldog - a proud fighter with a difficult character

American bulldog - A breed of dog that is on the list of banned in some developed countries. This restriction is due to the presence of her fighting skills and a corresponding past. Her second name is Ambul.

The owners of these pets do not agree with this state of affairs and require official recognition of the bulldogs by the states. Is there a logical ban on breeding these fighting dogs? Today we will figure it out.

How American Bulldogs appeared

According to one version, the American bulldog is a direct descendant of the modern English bulldog. Connoisseurs of the breed claim that the kinship with English relatives is not great. The most famous bulldog breeder John D. Johnson believes that the modern American dog is a direct descendant of the Old English Bulldog (in its pure form there are none today). Once introduced into the New World, individuals were crossed with pit bulls, mastiffs and bullmastiffs. This version is supported by the majority of dog handlers.

At the end of the 19th century, the bulldog was destined to change: a breed was bred, which included breeds that were similar in temperament, but slightly different in appearance. This was explained by the fact that breeders did not adhere to the correct cross, an admixture of blood of other species was allowed. The modern breed of ambulas can be of two types: classic and standard.

Brief History of Origin

It is believed that the ancestors of modern American bulldogs appeared in America in the XVIII century. - they were brought by immigrants who needed strong and hardy animals for protection, hunting, and grazing. Dogs developed naturally without deliberate selection. Dog handlers suggest that the breed is based on English bulldogs mixed with pit bull terriers and mastiffs. However, reliable descriptions have not reached our time.

In 1970, John D. Johnson, considered one of the creators of the breed, developed the first standard that was adopted by the National Kennel Club (NKC). Other cynological organizations, in particular the MKF and the AKC, have not yet recognized the American bulldogs, since selection work is still underway. In our country, animals are evaluated according to the description adopted at the Presidium of the SOKO RKF on 03/10/2011.

On a note. American bulldog appeared in Russia in the 90sXXcenturies - strong and impressive dogs were brought in as bodyguards.

Interesting Facts

Officially, the American Bulldog is a young breed of dog. However, quite a lot of interesting things are connected with it:

  1. The ancestors of American bulldogs are pickling dogs used in bullfights. From here came the name of the breed: bulldog literally translates as “bull dog”.
  2. Before the adoption of the first standard, the breed had several names - a rural bulldog, a southern bulldog, an American pit bulldog, a white American.
  3. American bulldog girls become good adoptive moms. Other puppies are often lined up with them - the females have a lot of milk and there is absolutely no aggression towards the “new ones”.
  4. The breed has attracted many modern celebrities. Among them are Brad Pitt, Charlize Theron and Reese Witherspoon. Singer Pinkna's forearm tattooed her beloved bulldog. The stars of domestic show business did not stand aside - A. Rosenbaum, V. Livanov, M. Aronova.

Description of the breed, standards and appearance

The American Bulldog is a rather large breed with a height of 58-68 cm in boys, 55-65 cm in girls. Dogs 63-65 cm and 58-60 cm tall are more likely to get a good rating. Weight ranges from 45-60 kg in males, 35-50 kg in females.

Animals are strong, but proportionately stacked. They have a rather formidable appearance. The exterior is a bit rough - American bulldogs embody strength and power. Boys are larger and more massive, girls are slightly smaller, but without a hint of weakness or thin-boned.

Official breed description (RKF standard):

  1. The head is large, heavy, in harmony with the body. Stop is clearly visible. Small wrinkles do not roll.
  2. Muzzle no more than 7 cm in length, which is equal to 25-35% of the length of the head. The width of the muzzle is approximately ½ of the width of the skull. The interbrow groove is pronounced.
  3. Nose with wide nostrils. Black or hepatic pigmentation in accordance with the color of the animal.
  4. The lips are damp, but not saggy. Black color is welcome, but brown is acceptable. In puppies up to 15 months old, depigmented patches may be present.
  5. Jaws are powerful, with a heavy chin. Bite - a snack, full or with departure. If the mouth is closed, teeth and tongue should not be visible.
  6. The eyes are medium sized, rounded. Sit wide. Pigmentation of the iris can be any shade from dark hazel to light nut. According to the descriptions of the owners, the American Bulldog has a lively and interested look.
  7. The ears are medium, triangular with rounded tips, half-hanging. They sit high, have the shape of a "rose" (the auricle is slightly ajar) or an "envelope" (fit snugly to the head).
  8. The neck is muscular, not shorter than the head. Its circumference in the central part is approximately equal to the circumference of the skull. Located at an angle of 45 ° relative to the top line. May be covered with small folds.
  9. Rectangular case. The index of elongation is 103-108%.
  10. The withers are pronounced. The back is flat, the croup is slightly convex.
  11. The chest is deep, about half the height at the withers. The bottom line bends beautifully towards the groin. The abdomen is moderately matched.
  12. The tail is thick and expands as it approaches the base. Set quite low. In a relaxed state, it takes out the hocks. In work, an American bulldog raises him to the level of his back. A slight bend at the end is not punished.
  13. The limbs are even and parallel, with relief muscles, located at a considerable distance from each other. The front ones are noticeably wider than the rear ones.

The breed description includes a characterization of the movements. The American Bulldog runs springy, balanced and economical. A typical gait is a free, not creeping, lynx.

In the process of breeding, the American Bulldog was divided into 2 varieties:

  1. Scott standard - animals have common features with the American pit bull. The muzzle is elongated, wedge-shaped, the feet are not so pronounced. Cope with the role of hunters or search dogs.
  2. Johnson's classic - massive and squat dogs look like English bulldogs. The muzzle is square with a sharp stop. Often they have deep folds on the neck and head. Ideal for security.

Sometimes dog handlers include descriptions of two more types in the classification:

  1. Williamson - includes 2 subtypes: long-legged, extremely aggressive dogs and massive, balanced animals.
  2. Pinter - mini-bulldogs weighing up to 30 kg, obtained by crossing classic and standard individuals.

Modern representatives of the breed combine the features of the Scott and Johnson types, since the main goal of the breeders is to get hardy dogs with first-class performance. The main purpose of the American Bulldog is a companion and bodyguard.

Color and type of coat

The body of the American Bulldog is covered with short fur, the length of which does not exceed 1.5 cm. The coat does not grow bristled, it shines beautifully in the sun.

  1. White - monophonic or with small tiger or red markings.
  2. White-brindle, white-red (from pale fawn to deep red) - the background color can be either white or color. Accordingly, in the first case, large spots of permitted colors will be scattered across the body, in the second - large white marks.
  3. Brindle, red-brindle - any shades from dark with red or fawn tigers to light with rare dark marks are acceptable.

The brighter and richer the colors, the better. In white-red and white-tiger dogs, light spots should occupy at least 1/3 of the body area.

Important. Black, black and tan, blue, piebald with black marks without tigers, three-color, marble colors, as well as the presence of a dark mask on the face - disqualifying vices.

Nature and behavior

According to the descriptions of the owners and breeders, the American bulldog is an alert and bold breed, deeply devoted to the owner. She is wary of strangers, so she became an excellent security guard and bodyguard. First, the animals try to scare away the intruder with a formidable roar. If the attacker does not retreat, they fearlessly rush into battle.

On a note. Cowardly or aggressive dogs must be disqualified. Puppies may show some timidity, but in adult animals such traits are unforgivable.

The character of the American bulldog can not be called simple. The breed is wayward, stubborn, prone to domination. She needs a strict leader, so she is not suitable for novice dog breeders. Animals try to demonstrate superiority over relatives - on skirmishes, skirmishes are not excluded. Dogs are very jealous, which makes them almost impossible to keep with other pets. An exception may be individuals that grew together.

Characteristics of the breed include a good attitude towards children - this is indicated by descriptions given by the owners of American Bulldogs. However, joint games must be supervised by adults. A dog, not realizing how powerful and large it is, can accidentally dump or injure a child. To avoid conflicts, younger family members should be told in advance about the language of the dog’s body and the rules of behavior with the animal.

How to choose a puppy?

Before buying a puppy, it is recommended to get a full description of the breed - visit exhibitions, chat with breeders and other owners. With a masterful dog, having a difficult character, only an experienced dog breeder can cope. It is important to correctly assess the strength and make sure that the future owner can definitely subjugate the dominant animal.

It is better to get a puppy in a reliable nursery. Ads on the Internet often sell sick pets or dogs that have serious temperament defects. Such an American bulldog is dangerous not only for others, but also for the owner.

The responsible breeder will gladly talk about the characteristics of the breed, the advantages and disadvantages of each baby, not only give a verbal description, but also demonstrate the litter of the parents. A mother dog should not rush at a person if he is trying to examine the puppies. If there is mental instability, it is worth contacting another nursery.

Healthy puppies of the American Bulldog are active and curious, they do not show aggression and do not hide when they see a new person. In favor of the baby testify:

  • strong, moderately well-fed body,
  • shiny, odorless coat,
  • clean eyes and ears
  • cool and wet nose
  • a perky and playful look
  • lack of obvious deviations from the standard.

When the choice is made, the parties enter into a contract of sale confirming the breed and the health of the pet. Together with the puppy, the breeder must pass the veterinary passport with a mark on vaccinations and a metric, which is subsequently changed to the pedigree.

On a note. The cost of a puppy with a pedigree is about 20 thousand rubles. For the American bulldog show class will have to give at least 50 thousand rubles.

For up to 1.5 months, American Bulldog puppies feed exclusively on mother's milk. Representatives of the breed have no problems with lactation, so there is no need for additional feeding.

At about 6 weeks, babies begin to receive cow or goat milk, cut into small pieces of meat. After moving to a new home, the puppy is fed the same way the breeder did. The list of products included in the menu should be clarified when buying a pet.

At 3 months old, the pet can be transferred to high-quality ready-made food for puppies or continue to cook natural food for him. In the latter case, meat and milk porridges - rice, buckwheat, are introduced into the diet. Milk is gradually replaced by dairy products. They should account for at least 40% of the total volume of food, since during this period animals especially need calcium.

From 4 months old the puppy is allowed to eat offal. The kidneys, liver, lung, scar are added to cereals or given separately in boiled form. Once a week it is recommended to arrange fish days - replace meat with saltwater fish. The viscera, fins and bones must be removed. No less useful are other seafood - seaweed, shrimp, squid. To facilitate the change of teeth, the pet can periodically be bitten by large beef bones.

From 6 months, the number of fermented milk products is reduced, replacing them with protein food, as the puppy is actively gaining muscle mass. The rest of the diet is as close as possible to an adult.

Frequency of feeding puppies per day:

  • up to 2 months - 6 times,
  • 2-3 months - 5 times,
  • 3-5 months - 4 times,
  • 5-8 months - 3 times.

Puppies older than 9 months are transferred to two meals a day.

Care and maintenance

American bulldogs are easy to maintain - it is enough to provide them with regular walking, balanced nutrition and minimal hygiene. The dog can live both in an apartment and in a country house. In the southern regions, aviary is permissible. In severe frost, the animal should have access to a heated room, since short hair does not protect well from the cold.

Proper diet

It is preferable to feed the American Bulldog with dry feed of premium, superpremium or holistic classes. They fully meet the needs of the body, contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals.

Serving size is set depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and the individual characteristics of a particular animal. It is acceptable a couple of times a week to give darling fermented milk products scalded with boiling water.

It is not forbidden to transfer a dog to a natural diet. Then the menu will look like this:

  • 50% - low-fat meat (beef, horse meat, rabbit meat, turkey meat) and offal (liver, lungs, kidneys, heart, udder),
  • 30% - rice and buckwheat cereal,
  • 10% - fresh greens (dill, parsley, sorrel, dandelion and plantain leaves) and vegetables (pumpkin, carrots, beets, cabbage),
  • 10% - dairy products (cottage cheese, kefir, yogurt).

Once a week they make fish porridge, twice a week add egg yolk and 1 tsp. butter. Dried fruits, cheese, rye crackers can act as goodies.

Walking and exercise

Description of the breed indicates the stamina and vigor of American Bulldogs. They are walked twice a day for at least 1 hour. With a pet you need to go over, play "bring-bring" or other outdoor games. A dog that does not have the ability to splash out energy turns into a destroyer.

On a note. Due to the short face, the breed is subject to overheating. If the street is very hot, the American Bulldog is walking in the early morning and late evening, when there is no scorching sun.

Training and education

Due to the tendency toward dominance, the breed needs early socialization and correction of behavior. Immediately after appearing in the house, the puppy must understand that the owner is the undisputed leader, and his word is the law. A person needs to act strictly and persistently, but without violence, otherwise the American bulldog will become embittered and completely cease to obey.

Without appropriate training, dogs grow up aggressive and uncontrollable. If the American bulldog is grinning or growls at the owner and family members, you need to take her skin and gently shake it. So animals demonstrate their own strength and superiority. The puppy will understand that his behavior is unacceptable.

The owner should immediately stop attempts:

  • pull the leash for a walk
  • jump on other people
  • chasing cats and other animals,
  • delve into the trash and pick up all sorts of “goodies” from the ground.

From about 3 months old the puppy is introduced to the main commands:

If there are problems with training, you should contact a professional dog handler. He will help to socially adapt the American bulldog and teach him the basic rules of behavior in society.

At 8-9 months, puppies undergo OKD. All dogs need a course, as it is aimed at developing complete controllability and unquestioning obedience. In the future, the pet can be given for special training, for example, ZKS.

Care and hygiene

American Bulldog requires minimal care. Description of basic hygiene procedures:

  1. Short hair is combed once a week, during molting - once every 3 days.
  2. The pet is bathed as it gets dirty, but not more often than 1 time in 3 months.
  3. After each walk, be sure to wash your paws, wipe your face after eating.
  4. Claws are shortened with a claw cutter, if the pet does not grind them on their own, moving on hard surfaces.
  5. Eyes are rubbed daily with cotton dipped in chamomile broth.
  6. Ears and teeth are cleaned once every 2 weeks.
  7. Treatment from worms and bloodsucking parasites is carried out every 3 months.

Once a year, the dog is taken for preventive examinations to the veterinarian.

Vaccinations and a tendency to disease

At 8–9 weeks old, American Bulldog puppies are vaccinated against the most common diseases:

  • carnivore plague
  • leptospirosis,
  • parvovirus
  • parainfluenza
  • enteritis
  • infectious hepatitis.

To strengthen immunity, the vaccine is administered again after 3-4 weeks. At the same time, you can get a vaccine against rabies. However, if the risk of infection is minimal, veterinarians recommend postponing vaccination until the end of the tooth change. Adult animals are vaccinated annually. Information about vaccinations made is entered in the veterinary passport.

American bulldogs are strong and hardy, but, like other large breeds, often suffer from joint problems. Therefore, when buying a puppy, you should ask the breeder for x-rays of the limbs of the parents to make sure there is no dysplasia.

Description of the breed includes an addiction:

  • to eye pathologies (cataract, eyelid inversion, squint),
  • allergic reactions
  • epilepsy
  • heart failure and heart disease,
  • immunodeficiency.

Sometimes puppies are born deaf - such individuals are discarded.

Pros and cons of the breed

DevotionPropensity to dominate
UnpretentiousnessComplex nature
High intelligenceInability to keep with other pets
Good attitude to childrenAggression towards relatives
Excellent security and guard qualitiesThe need for a long walk
Calm and equanimity

The American Bulldog is a dominant breed with a wayward character, therefore suitable for purposeful people with leadership inclinations. In the right hands, the pet will grow up balanced, fearless, infinitely devoted to the owner and members of his family.

Types of Charms

← Champion of Russia, Champion of RFLS, Champion of RKF – Grace Patricia Kelly. Owner Schelchkova E

American bulldog, or, as it is often called, ambul - a breed of dogs, known from the end of the XIX century. The American Bulldog is one of the closest, almost untouched relatives of the old English Bulldogs. After appearing on American soil, this breed was used for its intended purpose and did not undergo such changes as in Europe. The American Bulldog is a truly unique breed.

This uniqueness arose due to changing trends in the breeding of these dogs, because of the difference that existed in the requirements for both physical or structural characteristics, as well as for mental characteristics or characteristics of temperament. The American Bulldog has been bred for a long time, moving from one form to another. He was called “bulldog”, “rural bulldog”, “Old English white”, and today - the American bulldog. Throughout this time, the breed was used for various purposes, and its structure and temperament, respectively, reflected such differences.

Over the past 40 years or more, there have been two of the most different types of American bulldogs. One type of larger, more powerful dog with a shorter muzzle and more developed protective qualities, which we now often call the Johnson or Classic type. Another type of smaller, more athletic dogs with a longer elongated face and a pronounced instinct for pursuit - this type today we often call the Scott type or the Standard type. Both of these types are equally true American bulldogs. The difference in their appearance and temperament is due to their different purpose and application.

Dogs like Johnson, or Classic, were used for a long time as house guards and companions, while dogs like Scott or Standard were used as a "dog-dog" (to hold the beast) or as working farm dogs. In the last 10 years, there has been a tendency to mix these two types, which leads to a more powerful variation of the Standard Type dog. These dogs are often called the "hybrid / mixed" type. And since dogs of this type have not received a separate official name, they are referred to as a variation of the Standard type. The goal for breeders to obtain dogs of this “hybrid” type is to obtain dogs that are slightly more powerful than the Standard type, while retaining athletic capabilities.

Such breeding also involves the improvement of protective qualities while maintaining the desire to pursue the inherent etching dog, which ultimately leads to a versatile working, security and sports dogs. The American bulldog is now completely safe from extinction as a breed, and is very popular both in the country of origin and abroad as a working dog or just as a family friend. In many countries of the world, the amule was used as a wild boar hunter, or a working dog for guarding farms and ranches, in our time it is a service dog or a bodyguard dog.

If you show American bulldogs of different types to an ignorant person, he may not believe that they are representatives of the same breed. The "Americans" of the Classic type are powerful and expressive, while the "standard" are lighter, more athletic, their muzzle is longer and does not have such a pronounced "stop" as the "classics". Therefore, when choosing a future puppy, familiarize yourself not only with standards (often “smart” words used by professionals to describe exteriors seem too complicated for beginners), but also with photographs of different types and colors of American bulldogs. Today in Russia there are dogs of the classic, standard and mixed type, each of the types has its own fans. Of course, many nurseries specialize in breeding one or another type of bulldog. But every year the difference in these tapas is becoming less noticeable. In Russia, the National Breed Club has developed a unified standard for the American Bulldog.

American Bulldog breed history

← Dementra Ascabana Guard. Owner Kozlova E.

If you closely follow our publications, you should remember the detailed description of the history of the English Bulldog. (You can read this article on our website in the section "English bulldog") And for those who have not read this text, we recall briefly: the ancestors of the bulldogs were the so-called bullenbeysers, dogs, designed to hunt animals and hunt sports “fun” mobiles.

Fighting bulls with dogs is the most disgraceful page in the history of mankind, the brutal, bloody "sport" of commoners. Under the boom and hooting of a not sober crowd, two angry animals converged in a deadly battle, and everything ended in terrible injuries and (almost always) the death of one of the participants in this battle. Bets were made, bets were made, and if the bullenbeyser, or, as they began to call him later, the bulldog (English Bull dog - a bull dog) died, his brother fell into his place.

Intoxicated by excitement, the owners did not spare either the bulls or their dogs. Fortunately for animals (and for you and me!), Dog baiting in England was banned in 1835, and the further development of the English Bulldog breed continued quite differently. Initially, breeders did not pay attention to either genetics, health, or aesthetic appeal of the exterior - a “bull” dog needed only a compact size, well-developed muscles, fantastic endurance and a special, bulldog grip of powerful jaws, but later the English bulldog became a wonderful decorative dog is a companion. But back to a century earlier, in the 1700s, when the colonists began to explore the American lands and the New World was filled with adventurers and adventurers. Of course, the immigrants took with them pets, their dogs, and it is here that the ways of the English and American bulldog diverge, since it was in America that the breed developed almost unchanged, retaining its inviolability and old-fashionedness.

These dogs were bred only according to their working qualities, farmers did not need just a “beautiful dog”, their families and herds needed reliable protection: there were enough four-legged and two-legged robbers. The brought bulldogs were perfectly suited for this purpose. They hunted with a bulldog, he helped guard the owner’s house and family, in a word, he continued to faithfully serve the person.

At that harsh and dangerous time, the numerous talents of the bulldogs appeared in all their glory: they easily coped with coyotes and wild boars, could repulse armed bandits and confidently dealt with very dangerous and numerous packs of feral dogs, which were often attacked by farmers. By the way, neither the bandits, nor the predatory animals, if they managed to stay alive after the “hot reception” of the four-legged athletes, never tried to take revenge and return to the house where they were defeated. Probably, it was the successful fights of the bulldog with predators and other relatives that prompted some farmers to think of using four-legged watchmen as professional fighters.

But “sport” among the Old English bulldogs was not particularly widespread: these dogs were valued and cherished, they were needed for other, more serious and important purposes. From sources of the XVIII-XIX centuries it is known that bulldogs not only honestly guarded the household goods, but also often saved the lives of their owners and their families. In the future, so as not to cause confusion, the Old English Bulldog will be called the American Bulldog, since a companion dog in its homeland has already been registered as an "English Bulldog".

The main breeding centers of the American Bulldog were the southeastern US states: Alabama and Georgia. John D. Johnson, the famous breeder of this breed, claims that his ancestors exported from England to America several real "English bulldogs", which served as the source of the breeding material. He also says that the dogs he owns are authentic Old English bulldogs.

The American Bulldog is not recognized as a breed by such large cynological organizations as FCI, AKC, CKC, ANKC, Kennel Club of Great Britain, but this does not prevent it from successfully developing and gaining more and more adherents, both in the USA and for their the limits. The breed is recognized by UKC, UCI.

However, it can’t do without certain difficulties. The main organizations involved in the breeding and registration of American Bulldogs in the USA are ABA, ARF, NABA, NKC, JDJ and UKC. Such a number of separate organizations, each of which has its own standard, rules for conducting competitions and show examinations, confuses the interpretation of what a modern American bulldog should be like. Therefore, in order to unite and unite the “bulldog” world, the American Bulldog National Alliance (ABNA) was created in the USA in June 1998. The main task of the Alliance is to create an opportunity for all, without exception, owners of American bulldogs to compete with each other in show rings and other competitions, without discrimination due to belonging to a particular organization.

As for this, it was impossible, since under the terms of individual organizations, access to participation in their events was limited for dogs not registered with them. And although many dogs have double registrations, this still did not allow collecting all interested owners of American bulldogs at one event. ABNA officials prepared the breed standard, which is based on the standards used by ABA, NABA, NKC, ARF, taking into account the ideas that exist in the community of owners of American bulldogs.

At the moment, the American Bulldog is not an independent breed, since the Cynology Federation is not yet ready to recognize it. If you look at the photo of the American bulldog, you can find a noticeable similarity with the English bulldog, or conditional boerboel.

The fact is that all these breeds originate in ancient Egypt. At that time, mollusks were the favorite dogs of the pharaohs - the ancestors of modern bulldogs, and not only.

As time passed, traditions changed, just like the character traits of dogs that were valued by wealthy people. In medieval England, fighting between dogs gained popularity, because strong and aggressive breeds began to be especially appreciated.

A little later, the whole of Europe was captured by a new hobby - fighting with the bulls. They needed fearless dogs that were particularly large in size.

At that time, the peak of their value fell, both in entertainment and in financial terms. Only very wealthy people could allow such a dog, and therefore the owners were mainly aristocrats.

But times change, bloody hobbies remain in the past, and therefore once popular breeds eventually become completely unnecessary in the new society. It all came to the point that once common dogs can no longer be taken outside without a leash or even a muzzle.

Over time, breeds that became smaller were bred, and aggression was greatly reduced. The breeding of the classic bulldogs is over, there are English and French bulldogs. They became the direct ancestors of the American Bulldog

The difference is that if you look at the description of the American bulldog, you will notice that it has become higher and faster. The reason lies in his new occupation.

Attitude to people

This is a fairly large dog breed, because the weight of an American bulldog can reach up to 60 kg. Therefore, it is important to teach him to behave with people, and not only with family members.

By nature, all bulldogs are a bit hostile towards strangers, which is not surprising given their history. When a guest unfamiliar to the dog appears in the house, she starts visibly nervous.

For this to stop happening, you need to start accustoming it to other people from childhood. Over time, this will give amazing dividends - the dog will begin to feel good and bad people, especially those who can harm children.

By default, bulldogs do not look at other animals as equals, and therefore from an early age you need to start teaching the dog how to behave properly in society.

If you do not teach a bulldog to calmly react to strangers and dogs, he can turn into an animal that is extremely aggressive towards everyone except his family.

Description of the American Bulldog

Possessing hot fighting blood, ambuli are devoted and good-natured family dogs that successfully combine large sizes and absolute fearlessness. Chunky dogs with an attentive gaze are highly valued for the qualities of a hunter, security guard and fighter, therefore, in the process of breeding, special attention was usually not paid to appearance. Today, all professional breeders are trying to combine the pedigree character in American Bulldogs and decent exterior data.

Appearance, dimensions

American Bulldogs are medium to or medium-sized dogs, strong, and proportionately and athletically built. The length of the dog's body is slightly higher than the height at the withers. Representatives of the breed have a large head, which has sufficient width and depth in the cranial region. The muzzle is wide and short. Ears of small size, triangular in shape, not cropped and hanging on the cartilage. The tail of the dog is quite long, reaching the hock joint area.

The type of constitution is quite strong, with the presence of elements of rudeness. Ambuli have a powerful and strong, very well-developed skeleton. Sexual dimorphism in representatives of the breed is well defined. Adult males are noticeably more massive and bony, as well as larger in size than bitches, which should not have weak bones or malformations.

Males are 58-68 cm tall (preferably between 63-65 cm), and females are 55-65 cm tall (preferably between 58-60 cm), weighing 45-60 kg and 35-50 kg, respectively .

Wool colors

American bulldogs have a predominantly white coat color. In the color of such dogs, some combinations are also allowed:

  • white color with a red color,
  • white color with red shades,
  • white color with tiger marks.

Red or tiger colored spots on the surface of the body can occupy about 90% of the animal’s hair. Red shades range from a tan to a tan or pure brown color. The ambulance is not allowed to have black-brown, pure black, red-black and marble colors.

Depending on the color of the coat, eye color varies from dark brown tones to light nut shades, but preference is given to a darker color scheme.

American bulldogs are an incredible combination of courage and vigilance with a lively mind, quick-wittedness and friendliness towards its owner and all family members. Such dogs amaze others with energy and mobility, but at the same time they are characterized by dominant behavior in relation to any other dogs and some distrust of strangers. Moreover, a belligerent mood is not regarded as a disqualifying attribute.

An ambul may well be not only a working dog, but also a wonderful friend and companion for those who have a strong and strong-willed character, lead an active lifestyle. It is very important for the owner of such a dog from an early age to pay sufficient attention to training aimed at obedience, and also to teach the puppy to build non-conflict and maximally equal relations with all his fellow tribesmen.

The undoubted advantages of the character of American bulldogs include loyalty and dedication, as well as high intelligence, therefore such a dog is able to protect its owner from any threats, even at the cost of its own life.

American Bulldog Content

For the home maintenance of the ambul, you need to purchase some of the most necessary items, which include: bedding, dishes and food, a leash and a collar, a muzzle, a first-aid kit and hygiene products, as well as toys.

Diet, diet

Bulldogs are characterized by a weak gastrointestinal tract and a tendency to various allergic reactions, therefore, the feeding regimen must be strictly observed, and the choice of diet should be treated very carefully. A small ambul must be fed five to six times a day in small portions. A six-month-old four-legged pet eats four times a day, and adult dogs should be fed twice a day.

Recommended dry rations:

Subject to the natural version of feeding the bulldog, pre-frozen raw veal or beef, sea fish, cereals from cereals, as well as vegetable crops and herbs, fermented milk products are used. Pasta and bread, raw milk, fatty and spicy dishes are completely excluded from the diet. In any case, the food of the American bulldog should be regular and balanced.

Diseases and birth defects

Representatives of the American Bulldog breed are characterized by a tendency to develop a number of diseases:

  • violation of the growth of the femur,
  • tumors of the perianal region,
  • different forms of deafness
  • inversion of the eyelids
  • oncological diseases,
  • pulmonary aortic stenosis,
  • allergic reactions
  • joint dysplasia.

Excessive cowardice and aggressiveness, a narrow head and muzzle, the presence of any asymmetry of the visual organs and strabismus, overly protruding eyes, stoop, a sunken or hunchback, a narrow pelvis and a flat chest can be considered unacceptable pedigree defects and disqualifying signs in the exterior and behavior of the ambulo. also weak muscles.

Parenting and training

There are several really important rules in the training and education of American Bulldogs, which include the absence of any concessions. Deviation from established rules often leads to the fact that the dog ceases to take prohibitions seriously and begins to boldly ignore them. Congenital stubbornness of the amulets is incredibly difficult to fix, but the constant manifestation of hardness can completely curb the uncontrollability of such dogs.

American bulldogs are distinguished by understanding and intelligence, are able to quickly absorb information, but are not always in a hurry to execute commands, which is due to some phlegmatic nature and stubbornness. However, it is not recommended to repeat the same commands repeatedly in situations that are inappropriate for this. As a useful and tasty reward for the correct execution of the command or obedience, special delicacies can be used, as well as slices of low-fat and unsalted cheese. Among other things, in the process of training, the age-related characteristics of the ambulo must be taken into account.

In addition to the general course of education and obedience, as well as the general course of training, the owner of an American bulldog can attend the course “Protective or urban controlled dog” with his pet. Overly cowardly representatives of this breed do not allow the judge to examine themselves, they are afraid of approaching from behind, and they are also very frightened of unexpected or any unusual sounds. Dogs suffering from unmotivated aggression are able to attack their handler or judge.

Buy american bulldog

On the territory of Russia, lovers of the American Bulldog have a large number of opportunities to purchase purebred puppies of this breed. Puppies are mainly for sale through forums, newspaper or online ads. From a geographical point of view, the range of regions in which nurseries that breed American bulldogs are located is very wide. Well-established foreign bulldog kennels are also open and offer Russians puppies of this breed.

In any case, the reliability of the seller should be carefully checked. It is strongly recommended that you carefully familiarize yourself with the genealogy of manufacturers beforehand, as well as without fail to verify the authenticity of the seals on all documents by making a call to the organization involved in issuing them. The information regarding the features of the exterior and the absence of hereditary diseases is subject to refinement. Not an extra precaution will be the help in choosing specialists.

The metric or “puppy card” is subsequently exchanged for a standard “adult” pedigree, and vaccinated ambulances also have a veterinary passport filled out in accordance with all the rules.

What to look for

The hallmark of a healthy purebred American Bulldog puppy is a muscular body, a proud pose and attentive, clear eyes. Such a pet has good appetite and mobility, should not be aggressive or too cowardly. It is also necessary to make a thorough visual examination of the nose, eyes and ears, teeth, skin and hair, which will allow to identify pathology at an early stage.

The price of a thoroughbred puppy

In accordance with the standards of the current "dog" market, representatives of the American Bulldog breed belong to the category of inexpensive dogs. The cost of a two-month-old puppy of an ambul without a pedigree rarely exceeds five thousand rubles. Kennels specializing in this breed sell puppies at a higher price. Puppies are three to four times cheaper than representatives of the show class. The cost of the most promising puppies starts from 20-25 thousand rubles, regardless of gender.

Owner reviews

In American Bulldogs, the unsurpassed versatility of such a dog has always been highly regarded. This breed has never been bred or used for any single, specific purpose. Despite the general massiveness and well-developed muscles, the ambul is a very dexterous, flexible and agile dog, requiring sufficient loads and frequent training. For families with small children, the elderly, as well as novice dog breeders, this breed is not suitable.

It will also be interesting and useful:

You should not rely on the fact that the maintenance of the American bulldog will be too easy and simple. Education, as well as training of representatives of this breed is a painstaking and hard work for a long time. In order to teach a four-legged pet of the ambul breed to unquestioningly carry out commands, as well as to obey its owner, you need to have a certain amount of knowledge or seek the help of professional dog handlers.

American Bulldog Health: Things to Look For

Ambul is a real athlete and athlete. American bulldogs most often have good, fabulous health, however, there are two things that you should pay attention to the novice "bulldogger".

- allergic reactions
- a tendency to dysplasia of the joints of the limbs.

Allergies in dogs, as in humans, can be both one-time (goes away on its own after the cessation of contact with the allergen), and chronic (intolerance to certain foods and other irritants). The predisposition to allergies is also due to the fact that American bulldogs are incorrigible gluttons who adore pulling everything in their mouths. To avoid allergies, carefully consult your breeder about feeding your puppy. Find out what kind of food he is used to at home, whether professional food is combined with natural food in his diet, or not, and most importantly, what his mother ate during pregnancy and lactation. If you follow this diet, allergies can be avoided.

As for dysplasia, this is the number one problem for many dog breeders. The American bulldog is not the only dog prone to the appearance of dysplasia of the joints of the hind and forelimbs, therefore, the best prevention of this terrible disease will be, first of all, competent selection. Unfortunately, in modern Russian cynology there are no such laws and requirements that animal mating is carried out strictly in the presence of certificates about the absence of dysplasia in future parents and their ancestors, however today the situation in the domestic livestock population of ambulances is quite optimistic.

Firstly, the quality of dogs and breeds has improved, and secondly, the breed in our country is already quite popular and numerous, which allows us to avoid inbreeding and not to interbreed not the best representatives of the breed, as it was at the dawn of the era of ambulas in Russia. Thirdly, the majority of Russian breeders are in love with the breed they breed and are very decent, advocate for the health of the livestock and most often themselves, without any pressure and control from the outside, check their dogs with a veterinarian.Your breeder is not obliged to present you any medical certificates, however, if you ask about the health status of the puppy's ancestors, an honest and caring owner will advise you in great detail and will certainly give you all the necessary recommendations for the nutrition and prevention of diseases in dogs of this breed.

The working qualities of the American Bulldog

If you study carefully American Bulldog breed standards (and there are several), you will understand how much the working qualities of this dog are valued higher than the quality of the exterior. In any case, this happens in the homeland of the ambulance, in the USA. American Bulldogs are versatile dogs. By virtue of their addition and genetics, they are very mobile, develop tremendous speed, can make unimaginable jumps and sharply, at full speed, turn around and change the trajectory of their movement. Their physical abilities, intelligence and abilities allow us to use this wonderful dog in many ways. Ambul is a great guard for the home and the whole family, it can also be used in hunting, working with cattle, as a sports dog, and, of course, as a great companion dog.

Difficulties of the American Bulldog

The main "disadvantages" of the amule, although these are not disadvantages at all, but the peculiarities of the breed, is some stubbornness and unwavering stamina when sorting out relations with your own kind or enemies of the owner. The bulldog will never surrender to the mercy of the winner, it is not for nothing that this breed is a symbol of the US Marine Corps. The following measures will help to properly raise a puppy and adjust his behavior:

1. Early puppy socialization. The faster you start taking him out for a walk and the playground, the better.

2. Your personal leadership skills. The American Bulldog is a dog that is prone to domination, so you must be an authority for it, a “leader in a pack”. For soft-bodied, weak-willed, insecure people, the ambul will not work!

3. Help of professionals. An “American” must take an OKD course, and if desired, other training courses, and this should be done with the assistance of a good dog handler. In addition, the puppy should engage on the site and communicate with other dogs in order to instill in him a loyal attitude towards his brothers in the future.

Character Features of the American Bulldog

The American Bulldog is a brave and loyal dog. He adores his master and his household, treats children and other animals very well in his house, is very gentle and always ready to give and receive affection and other signs of attention. Possessing a highly developed intellect, the ambul perfectly learns teams, but does not tolerate any violence and does not like long and tedious repetitions. The "American" is not very helpful and does not execute commands as fast as, for example, Malinois and other shepherd dogs, but he will never forget what he "learned" from childhood.

The American Bulldog is quite wary of strangers. He is reserved to the friends of the owners, but friendly, but strangers can cause him some kind of internal tension. He clearly divides everyone into “friends” and “strangers,” but he easily distinguishes between imaginary danger and real danger.

Description and Features

The birthplace of the dog is England. It is believed that her closest ancestor is an old mollusk, characterized by ferocity and fearlessness. The main purpose of the ambulo has always been the persecution of animals, including dogs. People led him out as a desperate fighter and boldly made bets on him.

Interesting! Some owners did not feed their bulldogs for a long time, so that when they entered the arena for battle, they were more bloodthirsty. Today, dog fighting is a rarity, as the civilized world is gradually "moving away" from such barbarism.

Representatives of this breed always had a lot of fans, especially among gambling men who prefer to earn money on bets. Bulldogs led to the arena and instructed to fight, more often - with their own kind. This phenomenon was not uncommon even 50 years ago. The people organized the dog’s fighting with the bull. Of course, in most cases, they ended in the death of the first.

The dogs that inherited the fighting genes were especially bloodthirsty, but time passed and England changed. Gradually, with the development of society, animal fighting was officially banned. Accordingly, the need for breeding disappeared american bulldog breed.

Some breeders still continued to support their population. Thanks to their hard work, the world became acquainted with a modern ambulance, which differs significantly from its ancestor in character. This dog is much kinder and more affectionate, while he did not lose its former power and strength.

He is professionally trained to guard, protect people and animals. The young individual, which from the first months of life shows signs of aggression against people or animals, should be rejected. Aggressive ambulance is a vice. Such a dog should not be angry. Yes, she has a fighting past, which greatly affected the character, but there are plenty of positive qualities.

The representative of the breed is a faithful, gentle pet that has very reverent feelings for people. However, he is extremely suspicious of strangers, inclined to distrust them and suspect of causing damage. Needs early education. For a beloved master, without hesitation, he will give his life. Not afraid of man, beast or natural elements. Fearless and brave bodyguard.

Sometimes the ambul becomes an assistant to the hunter. Craftsmen got the hang of exploiting the dog in the forest to harass some representatives of the fauna. He coped with the task perfectly, attacking the game and bringing it to the hunter. Today, in some countries, bulldogs have a police service. Professionals drag them to people, and they attack potential attackers, often disarming them.

  • Wet food (premium class).
  • Wheat / buckwheat porridge.
  • Cow's milk.
  • Sour cream.
  • Cottage cheese.
  • Whole wheat bread.
  • Bananas, apples.
  • Carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli.

Products alternate by day. You can also give young bulldogs raw chicken or beef, but pork - no. Adult dogs should be fed dry or wet food. Eating a finished diet will reduce the risk of allergies.

Life expectancy and reproduction

On average, ambulances live a lot, from 14 to 16 years. There are also centenarians. These are healthy and strong dogs, well suited for security and company service. If you decide to engage in their breeding, then before that you should study the standards of all bulldogs well so as not to confuse them with each other and not cross, for example, an "American" with a "Frenchman".

Dog breeding tips for breeders:

  • Animals are selected based on such parameters: age (from 3 to 7 years), consanguinity (absent), mental adequacy (balanced and calm).
  • There are ambulances at the time of the female estrus, it is better - on the 4th day from its beginning.
  • Do not impose dogs on each other.

The pregnant bitch of the American Bulldog is becoming more tender and vulnerable. She carries puppies for about 67 days.

It is believed that the best nursery for ambulances in Russia is in the city of Krasnodar. Since these dogs are not in great demand (this is probably due to their notoriety and fighting history), their cost is low.

American Bulldog Priceintended for show exhibitions and having a pedigree - from 12 to 20 thousand rubles. Low-breed individuals are much cheaper, from 2 to 7 thousand rubles, but they can be purchased exclusively "with hands."

Possible diseases and methods for their treatment

Almost all ambulances are prone to allergies. Adverse reactions occur in them, firstly, due to the use of certain foods (spices, honey, chocolate, etc.), and secondly, due to frequent bathing (the components contained in shampoos are powerful allergens for animals).

The best prevention of allergies in a bulldog is feeding with a ready-made diet and a rare bath.

Unfortunately, many members of the breed suffer from joint diseases. It is not possible to completely get rid of them, but the veterinarian can prescribe a strong pain medication to the animal in order to relieve the suffering. And some of the ampoules suffer inversion of the eyelids. Correct their position is possible only by operational means.

American Bulldog Character

Pets are very sociable and mobile. Adult bulldogs are balanced, stubborn, decisive. This animal will not sit quietly at home, will not become a simple pet, therefore, during active walks it is necessary not only to play sports with the animal, but also let it run quietly without a leash. Outwardly, a four-legged friend may seem overweight and motionless, but this is only the first impression. Bulldogs like to frolic, expressing their joy, may not notice anything in their path. For this reason, you should not start a boule in a house where there are elderly people or small children.

Fighting character

The meaning of the word “bulldog” - “bull dog” determines its fighting character. The American bulldog was bred as an individual with a very strong character, having a tendency to fighting skills, the main task of which was to persecute bulls. He is able to become a universal working assistant, and at the same time he will be independent and stubborn. Dominant traits may prevail in character, which makes them excellent companions for work in a security agency.

Loyalty to the owners and uncompromising

The popularity of the ambul in its affection for the family, unlimited devotion to the owners. In a family setting, they fully show their friendliness, affection, play willingly, and are very patient with young children. For an ambul, a relationship with the owner is extremely important. Growing up, pets seek to understand the limits of what is allowed, so the owner must be careful and demanding at the same time.

Training abilities

The presence of high intelligence allows you to train the dog at the proper level, but its stubbornness and waywardness causes certain difficulties in training. Success will be when the owner cope with the desire of the dog to dominate, will moderate the willfulness of her nature, will be persistent and decisive. However, if the team is learned, it will be remembered for a long time.

Hostility to strangers

The peculiarity of the amulets is that they are very attached to the owners, but are able to show aggression to strangers, both people and animals. The attitude towards “strangers” will be from restrained, moments of friendly, to a little aggressive and alert. Sometimes aggression is manifested in relation to relatives. This is due to the dominant nature of the breed. To prevent this, a small puppy should be taught to other people, animals, to teach communication. Important is his competent socialization from the moment of birth.

Rules of maintenance and care

To properly care for your pet, monitor its hygiene, you should stock up on special equipment. You can find it in any pet store. Need to purchase:

  • for combing - a rubber glove,
  • for washing - a special shampoo for shorthair dogs,
  • for brushing your teeth - brush and toothpaste,
  • for paw care - a nail clipper.

The basic rules for keeping and caring for animals are not complicated. To keep the pet in shape and healthy, follow these recommendations:

  1. Wool, even short, must be combed out. You need to comb it weekly, when there is a molt - 2 times a week.
  2. Every week, the animal should be checked for parasites, be sure to feel the stomach, brush your teeth.
  3. Every day, you need to wipe your eyes with a damp cloth, process and clean the folds of saliva.
  4. You need to bathe the bulldog as necessary, but it is best with a frequency of once every 4 months.
  5. Claws are clipped once a month.

Accustoming to walks and physical activity

This breed is very active, it needs constant physical activity. During long walks, it is important to adhere to the following rules:

  • do not let the pet break loose or pull the leash,
  • learn to move on a leash in different directions,
  • allow free running only in designated areas,
  • Exercise regularly with your dog.

Pet upbringing and training

The process of education should begin from the moment the animal appears in the house. It is important to set boundaries and set your own rules:

  1. If the animal begins to bite, stop it with a strict voice immediately.
  2. Make sure that the puppy does not pull on a leash, does not bite it. From childhood, you should take the dog with you on a short leash, otherwise it will be difficult to keep an adult dog nearby.
  3. Do not let the dog rest with its front paws on people. An adult is a large bulldog that can drop a person.
  4. There is only from a bowl or the hands of the owners, and not to be lifted from the ground (protection against poisoning and parasites).

The most important principle in the upbringing and training of a dog, which has a difficult character, is the complete absence of compromises and concessions. She will feel any slack. However, one must understand that behind the obstinacy of the animal is character, not its stupidity. American bulldogs are very intelligent animals, so only persistent teams and the right actions of the owner will lead to the desired results.
