About animals

Basenji dogs are some of the oldest on earth. The native land of this native breed is Central Africa. There, in the rainforests stretching along the banks of the mighty Congo River, the basenji man tamed for centuries served the local tribes as corral dogs - they helped track and drive game. By the way, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, basenji is still used for hunting, and they live like old animals in small flocks next to a person.

The beauty and friendly nature of the basenji was appreciated not only by African hunters, in the tombs of the Egyptian pharaohs there are images of these dogs, several basenji mummies that belonged to the rulers of Ancient Egypt, for example, Tutankhamun, were preserved. There is a version that the basenji served the pharaohs as a charm from evil spells and witchcraft.

By the way, these dogs have a mystical meaning in their homeland in Central Africa. Basenji were also known in Nubia (the ancient name of Sudan), whose images were found by archaeologists in ancient tombs. But Europeans became acquainted with these African dogs only at the end of the 19th century. And this acquaintance was tragic - several Basenji dogs that African explorers brought to the UK quickly died - their immunity was not ready to fight off Old World infections. And only in the 30s of the twentieth century, the first basenji took root in the UK. In 1937, they were first shown at the exhibition as a "forest dog from Congo." In the same year, basenji was first shown at an exhibition in the USA under the name "Congo Terrier," but only after World War II did full-fledged dog breeding begin in the kennels of the USA and Europe.

Cheerful and energetic Basenjis have conquered people all over the world, and in 1964 the International Kennel Federation approved the official standards of these amazing African barking dogs. The inability to bark is a distinctive feature of the basenji, although the dog has vocal chords and is capable of both growling, howling, and whining, but these dogs do not make the barking sound characteristic of all its relatives. The exact reasons for this behavior are unknown to the dog handlers; most likely, experts associate the dog’s unwillingness to bark with the dog’s original purpose - to track and drive game in tropical forests. Perhaps barking hindered a successful hunt, and gradually the need for it completely disappeared. But this is only a hypothesis.

Basenji is a small-sized, graceful-looking dog, elegant and full of grace, which in its appearance resembles a gazelle. It has a proportionally built trunk, a straight back, a moderately wide and deep chest with clearly defined ribs, its short lumbar region and lower line turn into a noticeable waist. The tail is tightly twisted over the tailbone and fits snugly to the thigh with a single or double revolution.

The head is raised high and sits on a long, beautifully curving neck. The skull is flat, of medium width, tapering from the eyes to the nose. The foot is small. The eyes are almond-shaped, located slightly obliquely, framed by a dark eyelid. Ears set high, small, erect, slightly inclined forward. The nose is black. The jaw and mouth are powerful, with a perfect, uniform and full scissor bite, that is, the lower dentition is tightly adjacent to the upper, the teeth themselves in both rows grow vertically.

The forelimbs are straight, with a thin bone. The shoulder blades are very muscular, with the elbows adjacent to the chest. The hind limbs are powerful and very strong, moderately muscular, the hock joints are lowered low, not turned in or out. The paws are small, narrow, closed, with thick pads, noticeably arched fingers and short claws.

Basenji is characterized by two features that distinguish it from other dogs: wrinkles on the forehead and a characteristic curled tail. It is hard to believe that these dogs at birth have such a large number of skins - they even look a bit like sharpei. Over time, the skin is smoothed, however, for life there are places with a slightly sagging skin and a wrinkled forehead. In puppies, the tail is straight and, as the animal grows, it gradually twists and lays in a characteristic way on the thigh.

Wool and color

Basenji has very elastic skin and short, smooth, snug and very delicate hair.

Basenji dogs come in different colors:

  • Pure black with white
  • Red with white
  • Black, burning color with white, darkened spots above the eyes - “melon seeds”, as well as on the face and cheeks,
  • Black, burning bright, with white,
  • Striped: against a red background, black stripes, the sharper the stripes, the better.

It is an interesting fact that the last coloration was recorded by the IFF only in 2001. The following confessions await: striped tricolor, trindl, sable, marble, cream, light white on red, tricolor on red, tricolor shabrak.

A special feature of the basenji is the presence of white spots. Marks of white color should be present on the legs, chest and tip of the tail. White paws, arrow and collar are optional. It turns out that the white collar around the neck, which is so valued at exhibitions, is also optional. In litters, depending on the color of the parents, puppies with different colors can be born.

Basenji belong to unusually clean dogs, which are washed like cats. Most often, they tidy up their short coat, which also has no dog smell. It does not take a lot of time to care for her; usually, it is enough to comb her with a brush.

Basenji character. Who is the breed suitable for?

Basenji's character is cheerful and cheerful. Playful, moving puppies are not easy to control, but after three months it’s time to start training, otherwise it will be more difficult to achieve obedience with age. It is even more difficult to achieve if you do not walk the dog, whose energy pours over the edges. Count on the fact that the basenji loves the movement and need an equally active host. He may not be a professional athlete, but he must be left with free time to walk and be able to throw his stick far. Well, or let there be grown up children in the family who are ready to exhaust the dog physically. The Basenji dog is not aggressive, and will be good for young children in the family, but it is better to control the communication of the animal of any breed and child.

Basenjis treat strangers with obvious distrust, and will look after the guests who have arrived at the house. At the same time, they are affectionate to the owners and will well accept regular friends of the family. These dogs are not aggressive and will not once again distract the owners with annoying barking at every rustle, but they will definitely direct their mind to prank and will be noisier if the owners do not bother to take a walk. Most of all in the world, Basenji love to walk and run, however, since the breed is hunting, it is better to learn to control the dog so that she would prefer to respond to the owner's call than to run after the squirrel in the park.

Basenji is most often affected by de Toney - Debreu - Fankoni syndrome, a congenital disease affecting the kidney and their ability to reabsorb glucose, amino acids, phosphates and bicarbonates in the tubules of the kidneys. Symptoms include excessive thirst, excessive urination, and glucose in the urine, which are often mistaken for diabetes.

Usually it appears between 4 and 8 years, but can begin at 3 or 10 years of life. Tony-Debre-Fanconi syndrome is treatable, especially if treatment is started on time. Owners should check their glucose in the urine once a month, starting at the age of three years. The average life expectancy is 13 years, which is two more per year than other dogs of a similar size.

Basenji Care

Proper care of Basenji, in the first place, boils down to allowing the dog to run. Running for a dog is life. Pets are born runners, happy to indulge in such an occupation.

Basenji are characterized by lightning speed and increased energy. The conclusion of the dog in a confined space will have an extremely negative effect - the dog will lose heart and cease to be a full-fledged carrier of genes.

It is strictly forbidden to bathe Basenji - dogs do not tolerate water and stay away. Researchers believe that the reasons lie in the genetic fear of crocodiles. You can’t force a dog to swim. If it is necessary to cleanse the skin, it is recommended to wipe it with a damp towel. The matter of hair care is extremely simple, the hairline requires only periodic combing of dead hairs. It is much more important to take care of the physical component and keep the dog free, providing a chance to run and lead an active lifestyle.

It is permissible to periodically massage a refined pet with the help of a mittens-massager, promoting blood flow and speedy updating of the coat. It is prescribed to care for the ears and teeth, as required by the norms and rules of hygiene.

Where to get?

Basenji is a fairly rare breed. There are not so many Basenji breeders in Russia and Ukraine, and, in truth, they are only happy about this. The reason for this is the lack of commercial nurseries, the result of which very often is the loss of many qualities of the breed. Basenji breeders today are primarily trying to preserve all the properties of the basenji that have passed through the centuries and wild heat of Africa.

From this, of course, it follows that Basenji puppies are quite rare. And not in every city in the country you can meet a representative of this species. At the same time, it also follows from this that a puppy that you got with a high probability can become a winner of any exhibition. If you decide to purchase a champion, be prepared for the fact that the cost will be appropriate. The price, of course, will fluctuate depending on parents, etc., but it is still difficult to call it low. The estimated price of basenji in nurseries is from $ 500.00, "on hand" can be taken cheaper, but there is a corresponding risk. Puppies, the cost of which is suspiciously low, can simply be "fake", disappoint you and deprive an excellent African friend.

Some interesting facts

  • The estrus, which occurs in most bitches twice a year, in basenji, only once a year, usually in the autumn. On the one hand, this allows you to more accurately plan the exhibition season, which in this case can last almost the whole year, on the other hand, the fact that if the planned knitting is not carried out for any reason, the next year will have to wait. Basenji litter is not numerous, usually, in most cases, three or four puppies at a time. It is very rare that in one litter there are six to eight puppies.
  • Basenjis don't usually bark, but they can make other noises: growl, whining, howling, etc.
  • Basenji is hard to train. These dogs have lived a thousand years, so they are independent and do not like to obey. Goodies and praise may help in certain cases, but this is not a guarantee.
  • Dogs of this breed have a pronounced hunting instinct. It is not recommended to walk with a dog without a leash, unless, of course, we are talking about a fenced area.
  • Basenji are true escape masters. They can even escape through the fence. For this, dogs use any means, sometimes they not only jump over the fence, but can even climb over it.
  • These dogs are very active and full of energy. Therefore, such a pet requires a lot of attention and time.
  • Basenji doesn’t get along well with other pets, their natural hunting instinct is to blame. This dog can still get along with a cat, but the combined maintenance of basenji and hamsters, jerboas, rats, mice, guinea pigs and birds is not recommended.
  • Representatives of this breed are very stubborn. There are cases of manifestations of aggression by the animal when trying to get the dog to do something.
  • To become the owner of a healthy dog, you do not need to purchase it from random breeders and in pet stores.

The dog will be interested in a new member of the family, but may accidentally injure the baby. Also, the pet will not tolerate disrespect - it can not be pulled by the ears and tail, disturbed if the animal does not want to.

In order for basenji and children to quickly find a common language, adolescents should tell in advance about the rules of behavior with animals and the language of the dog’s body.

African dogs are well suited for keeping in the house. Representatives of the Basenji breed cannot live on the street, because short hair does not protect well from the cold. However, animals need a long walk to throw out the energy that is boiling in them.

Caring for Nyam-Nyam-terriers is quite simple. Dogs are unpretentious - even a person who does not have special skills can handle all the necessary procedures. However, due to the specific nature of the basenji, they are not suitable for beginners.

Interestingly, animals do not know how to bark. Nyam-nyam-terriers make gurgling iridescent sounds reminiscent of the crowing of a rooster. Because of this peculiarity of the breed, the name African frizzling dog Basenji has been assigned to it.

Nyam-nyam-terriers are naturally very clean - their coat requires minimal care. It is enough to comb the pet once a week with a sisal brush and a mitten brush.

Like other dogs, basenji periodically clean their eyes and ears. Claws are sheared as needed if the dog does not grind them on hard surfaces. Dental health is maintained with a special brush and veterinary paste. You can sometimes give nyam-nyam-terrier dentological treats.

Basenji avoids contact with water in every possible way. Bath procedures are required only in case of severe pollution, which happens quite rarely. On average, owners cost 2-3 baths a year. Dogs are selected shampoo for sensitive skin. Unsuitable cosmetics can cause irritation, itching, peeling.

An interesting feature is that basenji wash themselves like cats.

An African basenji barking dog needs regular walking and outdoor games, especially if it is constantly in the house. Due to lack of movement, the pets make a mess in the apartment, nibble and carry things.

Dogs are only allowed off the leash at special sites, as they can escape from the owner. Basenjis also love to chase other animals, giving free rein to hunting skills, rummaging through garbage piles and digging. If the Nyam-Nyam-terrier lives in a private house, the site is surrounded by a high fence over which the dog will not be able to jump.

In winter, it is better to wear a special jumpsuit for the dog so that it does not catch a cold.

Dogs are prone to the following diseases:

severe colitis, malabsorption, hip dysplasia, hemolytic anemia, Fanconi syndrome, chronic gastroenteritis, umbilical hernia.

The risk of disease is easily reduced by purchasing puppies born from healthy parents from trusted breeders. You should not refuse regular visits to the veterinarian, even if the pet is feeling well.

The first vaccinations for puppies are set by the breeder in accordance with the general schedule. After 8 weeks, when the immunity transmitted with mother’s milk weakens, vaccines are given to the dogs against plague, parvovirus, hepatitis, and leptospirosis.

After 3-4 weeks, the animals are revaccinated by adding a rabies vaccine. The next complex injection is done at six months of age. Adult dogs are vaccinated every year. They regularly treat fleas, ticks and helminths.

Mating is allowed for mature nyam-yyam-terriers, who have reached 1.5 years. The animals are first introduced to the neutral territory, after which the bitch is led to a dog. In a familiar environment, the dog feels more confident and acts more actively. If owners knit pets for the first time, it is best to invite an experienced breeder who can control the process. After a day, control mating is performed.

Basenji pregnancy lasts about 63 days. A couple of weeks before the expected date, you should arrange with the veterinarian so that he can arrive on the first call. But usually the Nyam-Nyam Terrier whelps itself. 4-5 babies are born in the litter.

How much do Basenji puppies cost

How much a basenji puppy costs depends on several factors:

the fame of the nursery and its reputation, the class of the animal, the titularity of the parents, the level of demand for the breed, and the conscientiousness of the breeder.
the cost of babies pet class - from 15 thousand rubles., the price of a puppy of a bridal class - from 25 thousand rubles., The most expensive show class - from 35 thousand rubles.

Interesting facts about the breed

Interesting facts about dogs of this breed will help to better understand their nature. The main features of the basenji are the similarity with cats and the absence of the usual bark. Even Nyam-Nyam-terriers do not like water. It is believed that this is an echo of the "past life" - crocodiles live in African rivers, so the animals preferred to bypass the reservoirs. Pets also have a negative attitude to rain. They are reluctant to go for a walk if the street is damp.

So why don’t the basenji bark? There are 2 theories:

  1. Animals have some physiological characteristics that do not allow them to make sounds typical of dogs.
  2. Dogs were tamed before people realized that barking could be useful. That is, in principle, basenji can bark, but do not consider it necessary to do so.

The exact answer is still unknown.

Basenji will be a great companion for active people who like to play sports and travel. Before buying a puppy, you should learn the pros and cons of the breed - it will be difficult for beginner breeders to cope with a freedom-loving pet. With proper education, the dog will become a reliable companion and will never let the owner get bored.

Basenji breed description

Basenji is characterized by the fact that they do not bark, but rumble, and then, only in moments of excitement, Why can not the basenji bark? In Africa, local residents explain this as follows: “In ancient times, when all animals and birds knew how to talk, the leader of the basenji unwittingly witnessed an important event for people. So that what they saw would not leak out of the pack, the basenji made a vow to keep a secret and remained silent forever. ”

Despite their small size, dogs have a bright and attractive appearance. They look aristocratic and elegant. They move fast in broad strides, while the back remains straight. Throughout their ancient history, the appearance of dogs has remained unchanged. The animals on the forehead have unique wrinkles that appear at the time of the ears. A distinctive feature of the breed is also the tail, which is tightly twisted into a ring. Dogs are odorless dogs and have much in common with representatives of the cat family:

  • often washed in a cat - paw,
  • walk quietly and softly
  • Do not mind going to the toilet in the tray, so they are easy to keep in an ordinary apartment.

They play with children with pleasure, but they will not tolerate childish pranks, for example, dragging by ears or tail. Therefore, children cannot be left alone with them.

They will be friends with dogs of the same breed and with other animals if they accept basenji as a leader - dogs of this breed tend to dominate. If another dog starts a fight on the street, the basenji, guided by the instinct of self-preservation, will not lead to provocation and calmly pass by.

Dogs are extremely active, even more reactive - this is the key to their health. They move easily and beautifully. They make excellent exhibitors. Due to the hyperactivity of the dogs, you cannot leave home alone for a long time. Otherwise, upon arrival, the owner will see surprises in the form of upturned and gnawed furniture, torn wallpaper and other troubles.

Dogs' hunting instincts are genetically based and, not being guard dogs, they easily feel a threat to loved ones. At the same time, the basenji make a stand on their hind legs and rumble desperately, warning the owner about the danger. The highly developed instinct of the hunter sometimes prevents them from hearing teams at the time of the pursuit of prey. Therefore, in order to avoid escape, it is recommended to wear a leash when walking on a dog.

  • Diseases of the eye - atrophy of the retina and cataract,
  • Entropy (with protein loss) - when, for various reasons, a plasma protein is excreted from the body through the gastrointestinal tract

Basenji Fanconi Syndrome

A kidney disease characterized by atrophy of the renal channel reabsorption function. It provokes the appearance of: glucose in the blood, the formation of stones, a violation of the interaction of amino acids with urine, an imbalance of water-salt metabolism. The disease is incurable, you can only support life. It is important to determine the presence of the disease as early as possible. But, unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose at an early stage, therefore, there are frequent cases of deaths among dogs. Basenji of 4–7 years of age is especially susceptible to the disease, so breeders try not to knit individuals younger than 4 years old.

Symptoms of the disease

  1. Unbearable thirst
  2. Frequent bladder emptying
  3. High concentration of glucose in the blood.

It is diagnosed by taking a urine test for sugar. If there is a syndrome, glucose will be contained in the urine (the blood sugar level will be normal). If the blood also has an elevated sugar content, then the dog clearly has diabetes, and not Fanconi syndrome. Basenji rarely has diabetes.

Basenji Owner Reviews

Julia, Nizhny Novgorod

“Great companions. Faithful friends of the family. Clever dog. Self. Doesn't smell like a dog, clean. Of the shortcomings, I note its reactivity - you can’t walk without a leash. Perhaps, it’s also gluttony - on the street it picks up all kinds of edible rubbish ”

Semen, Vladivostok

“A very good companion. Faithful, fun. It does not bark and does not smell. With character - can be arbitrary. Shy. Overactive. I recommend starting an active and energetic person, the lazy can’t cope ”

Ivan, Krasnodar

“A dog with an excellent character - kind, sociable, affectionate. Spectacular appearance. Compact - convenient to keep in the apartment. Clean, odorless dog. Clever. If you approach training with skill and mind, then you can really achieve success. But it is not easy. You can’t leave one at home - you’re bored and poor at heart.
