Congratulations to the participants, winners and organizers!

Well-fed carcasses of chickens, selected pieces of beef, fresh grains, and all the healthy food for your dog or cat that you might ever need.

These images feed manufacturers unveil through the media and advertising. This is what the US $ 16.1 billion per year feed industry wants consumers to believe in what they buy when they buy their products.
This report examines the differences between what consumers think, what they buy and what they actually get. It focuses in its most general terms on the most visible brands of manufacturers - brands that are massively distributed in supermarkets and stores - but there are many more respected brands that may be guilty of the same violations.

American Bulldog today.
The breed American Bulldog in Russia is currently undergoing fundamental changes. There were practically no pioneers of the breed among existing breeders and nursery holders. Most dogs carry the blood of several American bulldogs introduced at one time, which cannot but affect the population of ambuli within Russia as a whole. The problems of many dogs, both externally and in the field of health, extend from some common ancestors, inbreeding on which was inevitable due to the small number of livestock in Russia (CIS) and, often, a thoughtless approach to breeding a new popular breed.
American Bulldog. A few answers to many questions.
Creation of the ideal.
The ideal is almost impossible to achieve. You can strive for it. We must strive for it. It is necessary to strive for it.
Virtual Exhibition - December 2009

We have a new poll.
To pass it, you can go to the "polls" section or vote directly on the main page - the poll block is on the right-)

Logical thinking test

The test consists of 30 points. Each item has the form:

- Condition
a. first consequence
b. second consequence
c. third consequence

A “condition” is a condition of a problem, some circumstances that are previously considered to be somehow proven and always true.
A “consequence” is a logical consequence of a condition. Of the three consequences, one and only one is correct. Your task is to test your ability to separate the correct logical consequences from the wrong ones.

Library

I invite you to test yourself as an expert in the illustrations of the breed, which has a wide variety of head types. Bullmastiff is a human-bred breed (60% mastiff and 40% bulldog) of impressive size with easily distinguishable features of the head - an ideal candidate for a comprehensive study.

TYPE REPRESENTATION

I have long been intrigued by the seemingly endless variety of types of Bullmastiff heads presented to me not only in the ring. The head is the first sign of pedigree, and since Bullmastiff has this sign of amazing variety, I took it as a basis to informally demonstrate types for those readers who are not familiar with this working breed.

EIGHT HEAD OPTIONS IN TWO CLASSES

So, so as not to scare you with all the variety, I took only eight illustrations of real Bullmastiffs and divided them into two groups of four dogs. Your task is to, after familiarizing yourself with the description of the head in the standard (plus my comments), put each of the four dogs in their place in the class, and then choose the winner.

HEAD

The skull is large and square, i.e. length, width and depth of the skull should be equal to each other. A head with a lot of wrinkles when the dog is interested in something, but not in the usual state. The circumference of the skull can equal the height of the dog at the withers, the skull is wide and voluminous, with well-filled cheeks. Stop (transition from the forehead to the muzzle) is clearly pronounced. The muzzle is short, the distance from the tip of the nose to the foot (transition from the forehead to the muzzle) is about one third of the tip of the nose to the parietal tubercle / center of the nape, wide under the eyes and almost the same width is maintained to the tip of the nose, cut off at right angles, forming a square with parallel lines of the muzzle and skull. The lower jaw is massive. Nose with wide nostrils, flat when viewed from the front. The upper lip does not form long brylls, never hangs below the level of the lower jaw, in profile forms a right angle with the back of the nose. The fangs are very large and widely spaced, the remaining teeth are large, strong, and fit freely in the jaw. The eyes are dark or the color of a nut, medium size, widely standing from a deep groove between the eyes. Light or yellow eyes are highly undesirable. The ears are V-shaped, located widely and at the level of the nape of the neck, so that the skull gives the impression of a square, this is very important. The ears are small and darker than the main color. When alert, the ears rise with the tip to eye level. Ears wrapped back in a rose are highly undesirable.

IN ADDITION TO THE STANDARD

The Bullmastiff Standard does not describe the shape / shape of dark eyes, which you will not find in any accessible breed book, except for the author of the “Mastiff and Bullmastiff Handbook” Douglas B Oliff, who characterizes the eyes as almond-shaped.

FIRST CLASS (A, B, C, D)

You have read the official description of the COP standard, as well as my further comments and have an idea of the typical head of Bulmastiff. Now I suggest you study the first four illustrations of the head and place them in order of preference. Try this before and after reading my explanation.

HEAD A
This dog has a round skull instead of a square one, ears should be extended and their inner edge should fit well to the cheekbones. The wide muzzle is impressive, as is the strong lower jaw. Cheekbones should be better developed, there is weakness in the elongated neck. The eyelids around the eyes should fit tightly, be tightened and form an almond-shaped eye shape.

HEAD IN
The eyes are quite wide, but rounded. The eyes should be almond-shaped so that the dog has an intelligent expression. Ears should be smaller. A narrow muzzle, a small nose, a narrow lower jaw, everything requires a sufficient width. Drills hanging too low, and the skin fold under the throat should be absent.

HEAD WITH
The ears are too large and on the upper line of the skull are located close to each other than we would like. It is necessary that the eyes are located further from each other and the edges of the eyelids are tightened. The cheek area should be more full and with fewer skin folds. The back of the nose should be wider.

HEAD D
Imagine if this head could be changed in any direction like ballooning, for example: to increase in the skull in the region of round eyes and significantly expand in the region of the lower jaw, then a quite worthy head could be obtained. Note that the eyes are quite well positioned on each side of the muzzle except that the muzzle is not wide enough. Oh yes, there should not be such a large skin fold on the dog’s neck.

MY CHOICE
I put the dog first FROMfollowed by a head Ain third place is the head D and the fourth is the head IN.

SECOND CLASS (E, F, G, H)

Four more representatives of the breed, differing in the shape of the head and expression from the previous ones.

DOG E
The round shape of the head and nose of this dog makes it similar to a pig. The ears that are tight to the cheeks, the wider upper part of the muzzle, as well as the more labial and wider upper lip (the distance between the lower part of the nose and closed lips), can significantly improve this head. I would also like to see well-fitting teeth in wide jaws and cleaner skin lines on the neck.

DOG F
Abundant wrinkles on the cheeks should be absent, and the jaw bones should be better expressed (in the cheek area). The eyes are fine, the muzzle is wide, but it has too fleshy brylls. The neck could have a cleaner line.

DOG G
The ears should be V-shaped, and the muzzle wider. The nostrils should be larger (a serious deviation, by the way), wide and voluminous. They were too loose and heavy, like loose skin at the base of the throat. The degree of elevation of the lower jaw should be reduced, for those unfamiliar with the breed - there is concern about the danger of returning to the bulldog, although it is difficult to imagine such a thing. Let me explain it this way, imagine a horizontal line, I drew it under my left ear and next to where the head rotates. And this line is the level of lip closure at the site of the lower jaw lift, not so pronounced. The distance will then be increased between the nose and mouth. The upper lip could be as long (deep) as the dog F. It will be easier to see a return to the bulldog when you study the head of H.

DOG H
A wide canvas of the ears emphasizes the narrowness of the skull in the eye area. Slanting eyes probably exacerbate this impression. As you can see, there is no fullness under the eyes, and also this is not enough in the cheeks. Too flabby bryl, but the main problems in the face, is not it.

The main problem of the muzzle is the return to the bulldog. The muzzle should be elongated and the nose should protrude forward and perpendicularly. Such a return to the bulldog is undesirable.

MY CHOICE
Head comes first Fsecond place at the head Ethird - the head G and last place at the head H.

Winners
My "number one" in first grade is head Cand in the second - head f. Interestingly, the difficulty of choosing among these two portraits was identical to the choice between the heads of B & D in third place in the first class. As a result, my choice: Winner - head C.

DIVERSITY
Regardless of how you placed the dogs in 8 portraits (and this is a plus for you, if you took into account the strengths and weaknesses of the Bullmastiff), I consider the lesson successful if I could draw your attention in a significant way to how significantly the head may vary within the breed.

Dog Breed Description

At first, the bullmastiffs served as assistants to the rangers and watchmen, and little was cared for their exterior. Therefore, despite the long history of the breed, the English Kennel Club officially noted the breed only at the beginning of the 20th century. The first description of the Bullmastiff breed was made in 1924, at the same time the standard for the breed was adopted. After 11 years, the breed confirmed the standard, and has not changed since then, which is considered a very high quality indicator.

Bullmastiffs are harmoniously composed large and powerful dogs. Their growth by standards fluctuates around 60-69 cm. The dog weighs up to 60 kg.

The head of the dog is square in shape, large, in girth it can equal the growth of the animal itself. The muzzle is large, blunt, upper lip without bryly. Black nose is slightly flattened. By standard, bullmastiffs are characterized by a direct bite, but a small snack is allowed, although it is considered very undesirable. The eyes are dark in color, small in size. The ears are triangular, small, folded back or hanging. A black mask is obligatory on the muzzle, slightly brightening to the eyes, black spots around the eyes.

When a dog is alert or interested in something, skin folds appear on his forehead. Modern dogs, even in a relaxed state, can have two or three folds on their forehead.

The limbs of the dog are powerful, straight, set wide. Paws are round in shape, small, with large pads, loose paws are considered a vice.

The tail is set high, thick at the base, but gradually tapering towards the end, slightly curved. The tail descends to the hock. The standard does not allow a lowered tail with a kink at the tip.

There are four colors of bullmastiffs (taking into account the shades):

According to the standard, the color should be bright and saturated regardless of the shade. White spots are not allowed by the standard. The coat is very thick, close-fitting to the body, not too stiff.

Bullmastiff dog character

Although the mastiff looks like a very serious and brutal dog in the photo, most owners characterize them as kind and loyal animals. With their owners, these giants are very friendly and affectionate, and strangers can be scared away even by their very appearance.

In ancient times, the bullmastiff was famous for its ferocity, but now, under the influence of selection, this quality has remained in the past. Dogs, as before, serve as security guards, guard bars, banks, private homes and offices. But more and more people start bullmastiffs for a completely different purpose - as a companion and pet.

If you read the reviews about bullmastiffs, you can see: the owners give these dogs only the most positive characteristics. Calm and patient giants become best friends for single people and large families. To the pace of life, they are also not demanding. If the owner loves morning runs, trips and sports, then the dog will gladly share this passion. But even with a calm owner, the dog will not howl from longing: if he likes to have long gatherings at the TV and leisurely walks in the park, then the dog will definitely fall in love with them.

Bullmastiffs are great for children, they are always very careful with them. Despite their formidable appearance, they become very vigilant nannies for children and at the same time comrades in all children's fun. Bullmastiff is the best defender of the child, able to protect him even from deserved punishment. The child is the most important object of protection. This feature was far from immediately revealed. At first, quite unusual situations often occurred: the dog simply blocked the path of the parent, realizing that they were going to punish the small master.

Despite the fact that kinship among bullmastiffs there are fighting dogs, they themselves relate to those with a big stretch. First of all, these are balanced beings, usually with a phlegmatic or sanguine temperament. Bullmastiffs are real intellectuals who always think through their actions and are able to make the right decision. This character trait is so characteristic of dogs that rash and harsh actions are considered a reason for culling. Cowardly dogs of this breed or too aggressive are not allowed to be bred. In part, it was this measure that made it possible to obtain such intelligent and patient animals.

Training and training bullmastiff

Bullmastiff breed characteristics will be incomplete, not to mention some important features of this dog. Faced with danger, this intellectual, resembling a large plush toy (albeit a very serious one) in the family circle, turns into a valiant defender. It is interesting that the bullmastiff considers only people as the object of protection: the owner and his family. But he will consider it necessary to protect property and things only in exceptional cases or after the appropriate command. Therefore, you need to train a dog to guard the house from an early age.

A characteristic feature of bullmastiffs is their late maturation, so the three-year-old “calf” is still considered a young individual and lends itself well to training. But even older dogs, due to their high intelligence, are easily retrained, their habits can be adjusted.

From an early age it is necessary to show the dog an acceptable framework of behavior: first of all, to teach him how to obey orders and commands.Indeed, it often happens that these dogs, due to their noble origin, are considered by some teams to be meaningless (for example, “aport”) and do not want to carry them out. The plus of the situation is that it is enough to only shame the dog, and she will immediately remember it.

Like all large dogs, relatives who have fighting breeds, mastiffs need good training. The minimum program is the general course (OKD), it is also worth passing the ZKS - protective and guard service. But since the intelligence of the animal is very high, one does not have to expect automatic execution of the order. Often, after hearing a command, the Bullmastiffs look questioningly at the owners, trying to decide if there is a need for its implementation. Although in conditions of danger or competition, such slowness is extremely rare.

Buying a bullmastiff puppy

After reading reviews of bullmastiffs on the forum, some decide to have a puppy for this unusual dog. However, there is also very disturbing evidence of attacks by large breed dogs on humans. There can be many reasons for this, starting from improper upbringing and ending with the purity of the breed. It is possible that the dog simply felt the danger threatening its owner. There are similar facts regarding bullmastiffs.

In relation to large dogs, blood purity is of great, one might say, paramount importance. The selection of this breed was carried out for more than one century. Since dogs were originally supposed to be socialized and patient, aggressive individuals were severely rejected. Therefore, purebred puppies with a high degree of probability will not have negative traits that are not acceptable by the standard, or genetic flaws. Thanks to their high intelligence, they are easily trained in the rules of conduct. Therefore, with due diligence, a smart and calm dog will grow out of a puppy of bullmastiff, who will not become aggressive without reason. Therefore, acquiring a puppy in the kennel of bullmastiffs in Moscow or any other city, the probability of getting a healthy animal that meets the requirements of the breed is very high.

When choosing a puppy, its gender is of particular importance. Bullmastiffs do not differ so much depending on gender, and yet there are some behavioral features. So, dog girls are more friendly and graceful, but at the same time they are more independent. They are very cunning and sometimes even obstinate: having made a decision, they will never begin to change it. Bullmastiff boys are better suited for calm people due to the predictability of their character, therefore it is much easier to keep them.

You can find a bullmastiff breeder through a cynological club, but this is not the fastest way to get a four-legged friend. The standard procedure is that “in line” is recorded before the moment of binding, and the wait continues until almost all documents are received.

A faster way is to buy a puppy in a kennel. Upon purchase, the breeder will present all documents and a pedigree in which at least three generations of the puppy's ancestors are registered. The disadvantage of this method is the high price. For a puppy you will have to pay from 500 to 1000 dollars, depending on the purity of the breed and the class of the exhibition. But at the same time, you can be completely sure of the cleanliness of the breed, unlike if you will get a puppy by announcement: bullmastiff - in good hands.

Maintenance and care of bullmastiff

The content of bullmastiffs has its own characteristics due to the large size of the dog. Bullmastiff puppies grow very fast, so they need a lot of nutrients and vitamins. Adults also need an abundance of "building material" to maintain health. The dog’s diet should include enough dairy products, especially cottage cheese, meat and fresh vegetables are also needed. Fish is also needed in the diet, but only marine. Hake bullmastiff should not be given.

An adult dog needs about 1.5 kg of food in one day. During the period when the puppy's rapid growth begins, it is very important to observe the norm of food and not overfeed the dog. You can buy special dog food, but it must be of high quality. Excess weight will adversely affect the condition of the ligaments - and such a dog can hardly be considered the best representative of the bullmastiff breed. Adult dogs, too, should not be overfed, especially those that move little.

Despite the considerable size, you can keep a dog in the apartment. If you plan to keep the dog on the site, then you need to provide it with good conditions: a spacious aviary, which should have access to clean water, and a canopy from the sun. Limiting the communication of bullmastiff with people and pets is unacceptable.

Care for bullmastiff is simple. Once a week, you need to comb the hair with a brush to remove dead hair. This is especially necessary during molting; it takes place twice a year: in spring and autumn. When kept in an apartment where the air is warm and dry, molting can be very pronounced. The advantage of bullmastiffs is that they do not have a characteristic odor, so they are often not worth bathing. It is enough to wash the dog once a month, many owners use dry shampoo for this.

The ears of the dog need special care. Bullmastiffs often suffer from ear disease, especially ear infections. Therefore, the dog will have to clean the ears.

The eyes of the dog also need care. Therefore, they need to be regularly examined and, if necessary, washed with a decoction of chamomile. Tearing and redness of the eyes can be a symptom of the disease, so you should show the dog to the veterinarian.

When kept on the site, the claws of the dogs grind off. If the dog lives in the apartment, then the claws need to be trimmed every month using a clipper. After each walk, the dog will have to wash its paws to remove impurities, reagents and salt from the snow. Paw pads are recommended to be examined after each walk. If there are wounds, they must be treated to prevent inflammation.

Bullmastiff

Bullmastiffs are smaller than mastiffs (height at the withers - 61-69 cm, body weight - 41-60 kg), but they are also excellent watchmen. In the family, they become kind and affectionate favorites. In addition, they are tolerant to children. And yet they must feel the master's firm hand, otherwise they become aggressive and naughty. Bullmastiffs are very intelligent and intelligent, so they are easy to train.

These dogs are quite lazy, so they should not be allowed to lead a passive lifestyle. From this they can get fat and get sick. Taking the pet out for a walk daily, you need to wear a muzzle on it. In crowded places you can not let the animal off the leash.

Representatives of this breed have a dense, coarse short coat, which does not require special care. A regular brushing with a stiff bristle is sufficient.

Dogs need to be washed as needed. You can treat the coat with dry shampoo or wipe it with a wet towel. It should be remembered that bullmastiffs do not tolerate low temperatures. Therefore, you can’t bathe an animal before going outside, and in the cold season it is better to wear jumpsuits on your pet.

Bullmastiffs are quite healthy dogs. However, they are prone to hip dysplasia and congenital eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma. In addition, these dogs suffer from tympanum, so they need to be fed 2-3 times a day in small portions.

It is necessary to regularly check the paws - due to the fact that they have to bear such a large weight, they are often damaged.

This breed was bred in England at the end of the XIX century. to fight poachers.

In case of cracks, they should be washed and treated with antiseptic and early healing ointment or propolis. Periodically consult a veterinarian.

Although the bullmastiffs are menacing, they are loyal and faithful friends. In addition, they are very sensitive and need care of the owner.
